Job Purpose To ensure that environmental and sustainability requirements are effectively identified, planned, and implemented across construction projects. The role translates environmental constraints and risks into practical controls, permits, and management plans, supporting compliant and responsible delivery. Acting as the link between design, environmental specialists, and site teams, the Construction Environmental Planner embeds environmental best practice into project delivery from pre-construction through to completion. Key Responsibilities Environmental Screening & Risk Identification : Review project information to identify environmental constraints including habitats, protected and invasive species, heritage assets, contamination, hydrological risks, and noise/vibration-sensitive receptors. Environmental Planning: Define required mitigation measures, site controls, and monitoring strategies, integrating environmental requirements into construction methodologies and sequencing. Permitting & Consents: Identify, prepare, and coordinate applications for environmental permits and licences (e.g. Flood Risk Activity Permits, Marine Licences, protected species licences), liaising with regulators and specialist consultants as required. Environmental Management Plans: Produce, implement, and maintain Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs) and supporting documentation in line with project and regulatory requirements. Site Implementation & Support: Support project teams through site briefings, toolbox talks, and inspections to ensure environmental controls are understood and effectively implemented. Monitoring & Reporting: Define and oversee environmental monitoring requirements, ensuring data is collected, analysed, and reported in accordance with project and compliance requirements. Stakeholder Coordination: Coordinate with internal teams, subcontractors, and environmental specialists to ensure alignment between environmental requirements and construction activities. Compliance & Assurance: Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, planning conditions, and company management systems, supporting audits and inspections. Incident Management: Support investigation of environmental incidents and implementation of corrective and preventive measures. Continuous Improvement: Contribute to improving environmental processes, standards, and performance through lessons learned and best practice sharing. Required Qualifications, Skills & Knowledge Skills & Knowledge Environmental Awareness, Risk & Mitigation: Strong understanding of environmental systems and construction impacts, able to identify constraints and risks and translate them into practical, proportionate mitigation measures. Legislation & Compliance: Working knowledge of UK environmental legislation, planning requirements, and permitting regimes, applied throughout project planning and delivery. Sustainable Construction & Controls: Understanding of pollution prevention, waste management, and resource efficiency, with experience embedding effective site controls. Monitoring, Data & Reporting: Ability to define monitoring requirements, interpret environmental data, and produce clear, compliant reports. Communication & Delivery: Effective communicator, translating technical requirements into practical site instructions and ensuring environmental controls are implemented on live projects. Experience 3-5 years in an environmental role within construction, civil engineering, or consultancy. Environmental permitting, compliance, or management planning. Working with site teams and supporting delivery of environmental controls. Interface with infrastructure, marine, or environmentally sensitive projects is desirable. Technology skills Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams). Familiarity with GIS, environmental data systems, or digital reporting tools. Experience using document management systems or Common Data Environments (e.g. Procore, Aconex) desirable. Training Full UK driving licence (essential). CSCS card or equivalent site safety certification. Qualifications Degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or related discipline. Practitioner-level membership of ISEP/IEMA (or working towards). Professional registration with SocEnv (REnvTech or progressing to CEnv) desirable.
