Overview

Barts Health NHS Trust has a vision to be a high performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. The Trust includes The Royal London Hospital, Mile End Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital and Newham University Hospital. Our hospitals are equipped with radiological imaging equipment including modern digital radiography and fluoroscopy units, interventional radiological and cardiac angiography suites, spectral CT scanners, mammography units and a variety of dental units in our Dental Hospital.

The Radiation Safety Section provides radiation safety and physics support to users of ionising radiation at a time of rapid development in digital imaging technology, artificial intelligence and expanding clinical applications of radiation. The service provides RPA and RWA radiation safety services for large radiopharmacy, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy services within the Trust. You will need to be an HCPC registered clinical scientist and have MPE or RWA certification, or be close to submitting a portfolio. Proposed interview date 30/04/2026.


Main duties

The Radiation Safety Section is based at the Royal London Hospital. You will be expected to work on all Trust and client sites. The post holder will act as an appointed MPE or RWA for the Trust and for outside contracts, as required. You will support the head of radiation safety in delivering the radiation protection programme and to act as a designated site and/or modality MPE or RWA.

Person Specification

Essential

* Experience to act as an MPE or RWA
* Experience in patient dosimetry and use of patient dose management systems
* Experience of providing radiation safety advice in radiology
* Experience of managing and supervising staff

Skills

* Able to understand and operate a wide range of diagnostic imaging equipment
* Able to analyse complex data
* Able to interpret and apply relevant guidance and legislation

Knowledge

* Specialist knowledge (MPE or RWA level) in radiation and imaging physics as applied in medicine
* Specialist knowledge of radiation protection legislation in healthcare
* Knowledge of patient dosimetry techniques and software

Qualifications

* BSc (Hons) Physics or equivalent
* MSc in Radiation Physics or equivalent experience
* _registered Clinical Scientist_
* Certificated MPE/RWA

Desirable

* Certified RPA
