To work as a Mechanical Engineering technician as part of the Fleet Mechanical & Engineering teams within the three regional workshops to ensure service delivery of all specialist operational equipment and vehicles is met at all times. The Mechanical Engineering Technician (MET) is responsible for the Inspection, diagnostics, planned maintenance, emergency repair, bodywork, coach building and modification to all vehicles and equipment within the NIFRS fleet of vehicles and operational equipment. The MET will be expected to work across differing trade disciplines in carrying out their role.A full job description will be provided.
Responsibilities
* Responsible for the repair, maintenance, modification and servicing of all NIFRS emergency response fire vehicles and supporting equipment to standards defined in legislation and best practice.
* Responsible for diagnosis of faults, carrying out repairs and in depth overhauls on a wide range of specialist vehicles, operational equipment and components.
* To assist other trades within Fleet & Engineering services and the communication departments, where their skill set is more applicable to affect that repair, including all operational equipment.
* To carry out emergency puncture repairs, balance wheels and carry out four wheel alignment using appropriate tyre fitting equipment.
* Responsible for recording all inspection and repair data on the MIS and ensuring accuracy in times and parts is paramount.
* To provide estimate costs to the Fleet and Engineering Manager for the repair to any vehicle or item of equipment considered to be uneconomical to repair.
* To carry out asset tagging of vehicles and supporting equipment including fitting Radio Frequency Identification Tags (RFID).
* To assist Supplies in identifying parts and part numbers that are required to effect repairs and communicate these with Fleet and Equipment Managers and Supplies Department.
* Responsible for the security of parts, Issuing of parts to jobs and ensuring stock levels are replenished and maintained.
* Responsible for the issue of tools and equipment to the van and/or trades person ensuring security of the inventory and accountability is maintained at all times.
* Responsible for correct use and security of emergency service hand held radios.
* To be a master key holder of Service Support Centre and all operational fire stations across the region with access to buildings and contents out of hours when required.
* Responsible for assigned fuel card, also responsible for ensuring accurate records and receipts are kept for audit.
* Responsible for the use of petty cash including the collation of relevant invoices as required.
Skills and Qualifications
* Possess a certified level 3 trade qualification as depicted in the NQF in Vehicle Repair and Maintenance.
* And Have at least two years’ post apprentice experience working in a trade role in their area of expertise which includes heavy vehicle.
* Must demonstrate experience in plant mechanics and light vehicle repair.
* Level 3 qualification as depicted in the NQF in vehicle system repair and replacement in Electric/Hybrid Vehicles.
* Qualified to safely install, maintain and fault find both 240v and 110v electrical systems on vehicles and equipment.
* Must demonstrate excellent record keeping of computerised repair and inspection data.
* Competent in the use of IT software and computer systems.
* Competent in the use of a Management Information System (MIS) for record keeping on repair data.
* Possess a current UK C Class driving licence.
* Applicant must participate in the Regional Engineering on call Rota which involves working antisocial hours including weekends and late nights in order to support emergency response operations.
* Ability to lift heavy equipment and work in a physically demanding environment while following health and safety working practices.
