With a heritage dating back to the 1930s and based in HM Naval Base Portsmouth, 1710 Naval Air Squadron is a mixed Civil Service and Military team of technical specialists from multidisciplinary backgrounds. We use scientific and engineering reasoning to overcome UK Ministry of Defence aircraft operational issues, enhancing aviation and general military capability.

Job Description

We are looking for a Design Engineer to support 1710 NAS engineers in producing innovative and safe designs using Additive Manufacturing. You will be responsible for running the Squadron’s Additive Manufacturing development programme, as well as identifying further novel technologies to be exploited.

Additionally, your role will involve mentoring new designers to ensure that they have sufficient well-organised evidence to support their designs – particularly when this involves using novel technologies.

As a Military Aviation Authority (MAA) Design Approved Organisation Scheme (DAOS) accredited unit, we deliver assured industry standard aircraft design services. You will be a key part of making sure these designs meet the various defence and civilian standards. You may have travel opportunities to additional sites, off-site trials, conferences, and visits to external partners.

Responsibilities

As the Technology Exploitation Lead within our team, you will be responsible for:

* Managing Navy Command’s exploitation of emergent Scientific and Engineering technologies.
* Developing the use of Additive Manufacturing in military aircraft modifications.
* Mentoring and training more junior design engineers.
* Acting as the mechanical design engineer on aircraft modification projects.
* Coordinating STEM outreach activities and managing relationships with industry and academia.

We'll support you with a team mentor who will guide you in your structured training and professional development.
