Overview
Health Care Assistant (HCA) - Phlebotomy and general patient care responsibilities within a GP practice/Hospital setting. The role involves clinical tasks within training and supervision guidelines, infection control, patient information, and supporting the primary health care team.
Responsibilities
* Undertake, record, and follow guidelines for the tasks for which you have received appropriate training: Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory
* Measuring and recording physiological measurements in routine presentations: blood pressure, pulse rate and rhythm, temperature, height and weight (BMI)
* Venepuncture; prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions
* Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being, and how it can be promoted
* Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence
* Support and monitor patients during nebulisation therapy
* Run phlebotomy clinics within the practice (set up and run autonomously, within practice guidelines and under guidance of the Practice Nurse)
* Work within limits of professional competences; refer patients to others within the healthcare team as required
* Manage workload and respond to changing demands of patients and colleagues, including emergencies
* Communicate effectively with team members, patients, and carers; provide information using appropriate communication methods
Knowledge, Training And Experience Required To Do The Job
* Phlebotomy training essential. Competency-based HCA training desirable; updates on injection technique desirable. Knowledge of infection control and hand washing
* Interest in caring for people and equipment; experience in a care/medical environment is essential
* Evidence of ongoing development/training to potentially undertake more procedures in the surgery over time
* Evidence of team working skills and good communication skills
* Good organisational skills

* Use personal security systems and identify and manage risks; infection control procedures and maintenance of clean, safe clinical areas
* Hand washing and universal hygiene procedures; collection and handling of laboratory specimens; segregation and disposal of waste; decontamination of instruments and equipment
* Reporting and treatment of sharps injuries; dealing with blood and body fluid spillages
* Understand cold chain principles; safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs
* Know general first aid and resuscitation principles; awareness of statutory child health procedures and local guidance
* Know health and safety policies and fire procedures; maintain documentation and equipment in your area
* Use computer monitors safely; identify microbiological and chemical hazard risks per Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
Service Improvement and Quality
* Be aware of clinical audit; participate in development of current and new services
* Maintain waiting room notice boards and promote health education; provide health information leaflets
* Participate in routines and processes to improve quality and governance; ensure access to appropriate professionals
* Manage stock items in treatment and consulting rooms; align with practice policies, including whistle-blowing
* Manage own time effectively

* Understand basic legal and communication issues regarding child abuse, family violence, vulnerable adults, substance abuse

* Record information accurately using manual or computer systems; maintain confidentiality

The HCA will be expected to be able to use appropriate machinery (e.g., ECG machine, BP machine, centrifuge) and will be heavily involved in using computer systems. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Vision and Docman is required. Maintain patient records up to date according to practice protocols. Participate in Personal Development Plan.
