The Role
Are you a Detective Constable with operational experience, a sound knowledge of criminal investigative techniques and experience in leading the investigation of serious or complex crimes? Would you like a new challenge to work as part of a team investigating the most serious cases of on-line offences involving people who use their computers to download or distribute indecent images of children or groom children for a sexual purpose?
You will be working as part of a team, able to prioritise your workload and react to fast time intelligence and produce high quality reports and files.
You will need to be IT literate and be willing to attend and pass external forensic computer courses.
Advanced interview skills would be beneficial as you will be dealing with some of the most serious sexual offenders in the County.
If you have experience of working with external agencies and child protection procedures this will be of benefit.
With your sound knowledge of legislation dealing with paedophile related offences, you will own the entire investigation from start to finish, including leading the search, arrest and interview through to case building, charging and the presentation of evidence in Crown Court.
Job Purpose.
1. To develop expertise and good practices in relation to the identification and investigation of On-line child sexual abuse.
2. To provide support to investigators in other departments involving online offences by suspected paedophiles and registered Sex Offenders.
3. To provide expert and dedicated support in relation to the investigation of child sexual abuse.
4. To provide a focal point in the liaison between Surrey Police and other existing Agencies and Force Paedophile/Sex Offender Investigation Units.
Key Responsibilities
5. To proactively investigate offences involving the making and distribution of indecent images of children and online offences of inciting children to engage in sexual activity.
6. To examine Indecent Images of Children (IIOC) that have been recovered during the course of Police investigations in order to identify potential victims, offenders and locations of note.
7. To form close working relationships with other professional bodies and agencies in order to facilitate specialist assistance from them.
8. To reciprocate with the highest quality of service in the cases that fall within their field of responsibility.
9. Where appropriate, to support colleagues in the High Harm Perpetrator Unit in the management of Registered Sex Offenders and enquiries relating to known or suspected paedophiles.
10. To identify and pro-actively target and investigate suspected paedophiles who are engaged in online networking with other paedophiles and those who groom children for a sexual purpose.
Skills & Experience
11. It is essential that the post holder has a proven track record in the investigation of serious and complex crimes.
12. It is essential that the post holder possesses a sound knowledge of criminal investigation techniques and has demonstrated the ability to use them.
13. It is essential to have knowledge of National and Force policies concerning the use and dissemination of intelligence.
14. It is essential that the post holder has a sound knowledge of legislation relating to paedophile offences and it is desirable to have had recent practical experience in investigating offences of a sexual nature.
15. It is essential that the post holder displays sufficient depth of character and sensitivity in order to be able to deal professionally with disturbing cases involving children.
16. It is essential that the post holder displays an ability to work with minimal supervision.
17. It is essential that the post holder attend external courses which may require overnight accommodation.
18. It is essential that the post holder displays knowledge and understanding of child protection procedures and safeguarding.
19. It is desirable that the post holder is able to demonstrate recent experience in multi-agency working, and have the capability to develop and maintain effective working relationships both within and outside our organisation.
20. It is desirable that the post holder possess the skills to operate and interrogate computer systems in use throughout the force for operational purposes.
21. Good communication skills both oral and written, and the ability to produce clear, concise and logical reports.
Job Requirement
22. Be prepared to attend an initial session with occupational health department at commencement of the role.
23. Be prepared to undertake six monthly occupational assessments.
