Our profitable and well-established SME client based in St Albans is offering an exciting opportunity to join their finance team as an Accounts Assistant with full ownership of both the Purchase Ledger and Sales Ledger. This business is experiencing steady growth and is looking for a confident, organised individual who can take full responsibility for the ledgers and ensure the finance function is accurate, reliable, and month-end ready.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with strong ledger experience who is looking for a hands-on role where they can truly take ownership. The successful candidate will play an integral part in ensuring the ledgers are fully maintained, reconciled, and prepared for handover to the Management Accountant at month end.
Responsibilities
• Take full ownership of both the Sales Ledger and Purchase Ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness
• Provide a full end-to-end service across AP and AR, including invoice processing, raising sales invoices, allocations, and query resolution
• Complete supplier statement reconciliations, bank postings, and nominal ledger upkeep
• Ensure all ledger activity is accurate and ready for month-end reporting
• Work closely with the Management Accountant, providing clear commentary and explanations where required
• Assist with process improvements and uphold strong financial controls
• Liaise confidently with suppliers, customers, and internal stakeholders
Skills Required
• Proven experience managing both AP and AR ledgers, ideally within an SME environment
• Strong working knowledge of Sage 50 is desirable
• Highly organised with a track record of meeting deadlines and working autonomously
• Strong Excel skills and confidence working with financial data
• Excellent communication and relationship building skills, able to work effectively with suppliers, customers, and the finance team
• A proactive, ownership-driven mindset with strong attention to detail
