Role:Young People's Advocacy and Engagement Officer
Contract:Full-time, 35 hours per week(including evenings and weekends)
Location:Hove office base with travel across Sussex

To empower young people with vision impairment to embrace every opportunity life has to offer, through vibrant events and social opportunities, uplifting mentorship programmes, and promoting independence and self-advocacy skills. We aim to foster a community where identity is embraced, potential is ignited, and every young person is inspired to thrive—socially, physically, and emotionally.
What you will be doing:
Social Engagement
* Organise inclusive, confidence-building activities across Sussex
* Host regular meetups and collaborate with local partners
Independence Support
* Help develop essential life skills and self-advocacy
* Create personalised outcome plans and monitor progress
* Connect with external services and ensure holistic support
Youth Voice & Community Building
* Lead a youth forum focused on self-expression and peer support
* Share youth-led insights with the leadership team
* Build and grow an alumni network to foster mentorship
Partnership & Transition Support
* Liaise with local authorities, education, and healthcare services
* Support transition to adult services
* Raise awareness of BCT’s work through external engagement
* Keep accurate records and evaluate outcomes
* Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed
* Conduct risk assessments for all activities
* Experience working with young people
* Strong understanding of barriers faced by vision-impaired individuals
* Experience in event planning; self-motivated and organised
* Proficient in Microsoft Office, social media, and databases
* Commitment to safeguarding, and diversity, equality, and inclusion
* Personal or professional experience of vision impairment
* Knowledge of assistive technology
* Experience of youth panels, forums, or charity sector work
