Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our multi-discipline ophthalmology team, working in close collaboration with supportive colleagues.

The appointee will have a principle interest in Oculoplastics and participation in the eye casualty department is essential.

Main duties of the job

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients with a wide variety of ophthalmic conditions

To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of ophthalmology patients.

Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students, postgraduates and other healthcare personnel.

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education/professional and service development (CME/CPD)

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

8. The post-holder will be required to maintain their continuing professional development (CPD) to be able to successfully revalidate. As per the Trust requirement the successful candidate will be required to have annual appraisal and attend / keep fully up to date with statutory and mandatory training as stipulated.
9. The post-holder will be expected to undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific Induction and competency Program's appropriate to the role.
10. To be able to provide support in the emergency eye department.
11. To be a point of escalation when the emergency department requires senior consultant advice.
12. To provide Consultant Ophthalmology services at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust.
13. To provide Consultant Ophthalmology services by way of Outpatient clinics and Outpatient procedure lists at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust.
14. Our Ophthalmology services are provided over four sites, York, Scarborough, Malton and Bridlington.
15. To work flexibly and cooperatively with the other consultant Ophthalmologists to maximise the utilisation of outpatient procedure lists and outpatient clinics.
16. To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care as described in the GMC Guidance Duties of a Doctor are followed at all times; and that bad practice is reported.
17. To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes. To actively participate in audit.
18. To provide continuing responsibility for the care of patients under their care and for the proper organisation and functioning of clinical practice.
19. To work closely with other specialties, departments and outside agencies to deliver the objectives of the Department.
20. To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents are reported in a timely manner.
21. To participate in yearly appraisal and job planning process.
22. To undertake Mandatory & Statutory training as determined by the Trust.
23. To support allied health professionals in their development and teaching.
24. To Support the Nursing team in development and training.

Person specification

Qualifications and Registration

Essential criteria

25. Hold a medical qualification registered with the GMC
26. Hold a license to practise with the General Medical Council
27. Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Ophthalmology
28. Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Ophthalmology via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR or European Community Rights

Desirable criteria

29. Ability to supervise postgraduate research
30. Substantive NHS experience
31. MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research

Additional

Essential criteria

32. Able to make own arrangements for travel between working sites

Mentoring and Teaching

Essential criteria

33. Experience of teaching undergraduate and post graduate trainees
34. Experience of undertaking audits and presenting their findings
35. Experience of supervision of postgraduate trainees

Desirable criteria

36. Experience of supervising SpRs/specialist trainees
37. Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates

Clinical Practise and Competence

Essential criteria

38. Evidence of subspecialist clinical experience and skills in emergency eye care
39. Knowledge of good medical practice and the General Medical Council requirements

Desirable criteria

40. Post CCT Fellowship in emergency eye care
