Job Summary

The Underwriting Strategy and Central Portfolio Management team works at the heart of the business to shape Chaucer's underwriting growth and transformation strategy, and actively supports its implementation.

The team has three main workstreams: underwriting strategy; portfolio management; and underwriting operational change. This role will sit within the portfolio management workstream and work extensively with the Portfolio Analyst who reports into the Portfolio Manager. The primary responsibility for this role is to support the Portfolio Analyst and Manager by maintaining the reporting suite and performing regular portfolio analysis, monitoring, reporting and stakeholder communications. Secondary responsibility is to support the other two workstreams within the wider team to effectively execute the team's duties and deliver on the objectives as and when required.

Through the remit of the Chief Underwriting Officer, there is scope to support underwriting performance and optimisation over time, including support with:

* Underwriting reporting suite maintenance and improvements
* Underwriting portfolio analysis
* Underwriting portfolio monitoring
* Detailed performance reviews
* Portfolio reporting
* Stakeholder collaboration
* Wider team deliverables

Main duties

This role has tremendous scope for learning and development across a range of specialty (re)insurance activities and is ideal for someone looking to progress their career in the industry. Additionally, this role offers significant opportunities for exposure to underwriting leadership.

This role suits an ambitious, keen and proactive candidate that is willing to learn and develop a diverse range of skills. Within this role, the candidate can expect to develop their portfolio management knowledge and have opportunity to build on key analytical skills by working alongside industry experts and being supported in personal development opportunities and appropriate training.

The role will be to assist the team across a range of activities, with a focus on those as outlined above. This may include:

* Underwriting reporting suite maintenance and improvements: Working closely with the team's portfolio analyst to refresh and update an extensive suite of existing reports, so the ability to interpret and understand complex excel-based reports is essential. Candidate will be expected to aid in the migration and eventual user testing of reports from Excel to Power BI with the support of in-house BI team. Also aim to suggest improvements to the reports in terms of efficiency and outputs.
* Underwriting portfolio analysis: Conduct robust, usable analysis summarising key performance trends for each segment. Support with feedback loop into key planning milestones and strategy.
* Underwriting portfolio monitoring: Support with monitoring performance of the underwriting portfolio, escalating any trends and changes in performance esp. where likely to deviate vs. strategy and plan.
* Detailed reviews: Support with detailed performance reviews and optimisation analysis, including in-depth analysis to assess the profitability and sustainability of the underwriting portfolio.
* Reporting: Support with preparing and presenting underwriting performance dashboards and summarising outputs from detailed performance reviews,
* Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate with underwriting teams to review and improve performance and non-UW teams to drive relevant MI.
* Support wider team with regular analysis, performance reviews, monitoring and reporting as required.
* Drafting communications and presentations and support with regular analysis and reporting requirements, including collating slides for various committee and board reports.

This is an analytical role and to be successful in it you will need to be curious, proactive, goal orientated, organised and show attention to detail. You will interact closely with underwriting management and widely across the business, so it would be helpful to have strong verbal and written communication skills.

Skills & Competencies

* Relevant experience in the (re)insurance industry, working either in portfolio management or financial analysis teams.
* Experience with maintaining and improving extensive suite of MI, sourced from various data-heavy sources.
* Experience with summarising key takeaways in a clear and succinct manner, suited to stakeholders.
* Able to demonstrate passion and hunger for improving and developing Chaucer's MI suite.
* Enthusiasm for the global P&C (re)insurance market and issues facing the industry.
* Analytical and quantitative skills: Excellent analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and make informed decisions.
* Technical Proficiency: Expert understanding of Excel is essential, VBA and/or Power BI knowledge desirable, with an expectation to continue to build on these skills. Ability to interpret and understand complex excel-based reports is essential
* Attention to Detail: High level of attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
* Proficient user of Microsoft Office products, in particular Excel
* Able to perform robust analysis and present succinctly
* Articulate written and verbal communicator
* Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues and develop effective solutions.
* Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Education

* Numeric degree desirable, but not essential.
* ACII qualification or progress towards desirable.
