Job Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Midwife to join our team on Delivery Suite as a Shift Coordinator, based at Ysbyty Gwynedd. This is a fixed‑term secondment until 13.03.2027. The successful candidate will take responsibility for the coordination of care within the Delivery Suite, including the assessment, planning and implementation of care for both high‑ and low‑risk women in the antenatal, intrapartum and occasionally postnatal periods.

The role involves clinical leadership at ward level, ensuring that the highest standards of clinical care are met and continuously monitored. Responsibilities include supervision and mentorship of learners, supporting and leading a team of staff in the delivery of evidence‑based, client‑centred care, and ensuring that all care is delivered in accordance with Health Board policies and procedures.


Main Duties of the Job

* Ensure day‑to‑day supervision, allocation and coordination of staff with appropriate recognition of skill mix and ability.
* Supervise, advise and support medical staff and complete their appraisals as requested.
* Foster effective communication systems between staff of all disciplines to achieve a positive working environment.
* Recognise, communicate and reward the achievements of the team and individuals.
* Identify and report any poor performance issues.
* Take responsibility for the management of resources in the ward area, identifying and addressing any issues that affect learning, development, performance and clinical care.
* Report all incidents and accidents via the Trust and Maternity Unit risk management systems.
* Participate in the unit bleep holder rota, assuming responsibility on a shift‑by‑shift basis for the maternity and gynaecology services.
* Ensure the ward environment is safe, clean and tidy and that the Health & Safety Policy is adhered to at all times.
* Take overall responsibility for ensuring appropriate skill mix in the ward environment, including completion of the duty rota for Labour Ward staff.
* Provide professional well‑being support to staff allocated to work on Labour Ward, being available and willing to discuss openly any problems or dilemmas.
* Diffuse challenging behaviour and act as a role model to ensure that all potentially difficult situations are managed in a sensitive manner.


Qualifications

* Registered Midwife.
* Evidence of study at Level 2.
* Completion of ALSO Course (If not already completed).


Desirable Qualifications

* Completion of mentorship course.
* Evidence of study at Level 3.
* Completion of ALSO Course.


Experience

* Sufficient post‑registration experience.
* Broad experience of midwifery practice, desire to work on Delivery Suite.
* Experience working in all areas with recent Delivery Suite experience.


Essential Skills and Competencies

* Leadership, assertiveness and people management skills.
* Time management and effective communication skills.
* Advanced clinical skills in intrapartum care.
* Proven ability to shift‑coordinate with confidence and competence.


Desirable Skills and Competencies

* Knowledge of Health Board policies and risk management.
* IT skills, knowledge of resource management and audit skills.
* Knowledge of budgets, venepuncture and cannulation skills.

Welsh language skills are desirable; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
