The Control Room manages the SP Manweb Distribution networks. It is responsible for both Planned and Fault work and delivering excellent Customer Service.

The Control Engineer role has shift-based (and normal working hours) opportunities, located in the SPEN district offices in Birkenhead and sits within Customer Service – reporting to the Senior Control Engineer.

In this role, you will be responsible for the control and operation of the SP Manweb electrical networks under normal, outage, and fault situations. This involves managing safety, system integrity, customer service, and coordination of system access while ensuring compliance with our Distribution Licence.

As SPEN transitions to become a DSO, this role offers an exciting opportunity to be part of our future distribution network strategy, ensuring exceptional customer service, network security, and access to flexible energy resources.

Ensure that the network is operated in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with Operational Procedures and Safety Rules.

What you’ll be doing

* Facilitate change necessary within Customer Services Delivery as the Distribution networks transition to Net Zero.
* Work with new and existing generation partners to utilize flexibility service arrangements.
* Review and investigate system performance following major incidents and faults.
* Provide advice and support on technical matters relating to the network.
* Approve and control all outage and network access requests, ensuring risk to network and system security is minimized.
* Coordinate outage planning and liaise with internal/external third parties for all network activities.
* Manage customer service proactively and reactively to meet all customer service KPIs.
* Participate in business and organizational change to maintain and improve performance, productivity, and service standards.
* Implement Contingency & Emergency Plans, escalate significant incidents as required.
* Complete statutory reports and paperwork for network incidents.
* Monitor CML outage requests to minimize effects on system and targets.
* Support operational data accuracy for IT systems like SOP/ TLR.
* Contribute to the development and implementation of new processes and initiatives.
* Own objectives to improve safety and customer service culture across the team and operations.

What you’ll bring

* Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
* Ability to build strong relationships across all business areas and levels.
* Experience dealing with major customers.
* Proven aptitude for using and developing IT solutions.
* Ability to coordinate complex tasks from various business areas and devise solutions.
* Knowledge of key Energy Networks policies, procedures, and practices.
* Responsibility and accountability for tasks, supporting team goals.
* Interpretation of Asset data & post-fault analysis.
* Ability to define and document new processes for strategic changes.
* Knowledge of SPEN policies, procedures, and practices.
* Understanding of health, safety, and environmental legislation.
* Negotiation, communication, influencing, and people management skills.
* Knowledge of transmission/distribution systems and outage planning.
* Effective decision-making skills.
* HNC with relevant experience or Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
* Previous Control Room experience (advantageous).
* Knowledge of distribution and/or transmission networks.
* Operational experience at HV and above.
* PowerOn/SCADA experience (advantageous).
