Job Responsibilities

* Accountable for the overall clinical and operational day‑to‑day delivery of orthopaedic outpatient, fracture clinic and plaster room services.
* Oversee clinical standards of care and lead the workforce across RBH & BGH ELHT sites.
* Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, personal and effective care with excellent outcomes.
* Support the Matron, Directorate Manager and clinical teams to achieve key performance indicators for waiting times, new ways of working and service delivery.
* Make informed decisions within professional practice scope, engaging staff, patients and the public.
* Provide assurance to the Matron of adherence to agreed standards and policies.
* Ensure a robust professional approach to service development and improvement, underpinning changes to structures and roles with appropriate support and ongoing professional development.
* Develop and maintain communication with the multidisciplinary team on complex matters, improving quality and ensuring high‑quality care while promoting equality and diversity.
* Test and review new concepts, models, methods and equipment in partnership with company representatives.
* Work clinically in the outpatient clinic as required to keep practice updated.
* Organise and deploy staff according to competence and service need.
* Work closely with the Directorate Manager, Matron and Clinical Director on demand and capacity planning, including long‑term and short‑term service needs.
* Support the Directorate Manager / Deputy in developing business planning requirements for the outpatient service.
* Support and challenge team members appropriately.
* Address complaints by patients, members of the public and staff in accordance with Trust values.
* Ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of staff, patients and visitors.


Training & Development

* Ensure all staff complete required mandatory training and maintain up‑to‑date skills.
* Carry out annual appraisals and 1‑to‑1 meetings with line managers to identify further training needs.
* Implement training specific to specialty need for all outpatient staff.
* Develop new ideas and work within the clinic area.


Organisational Responsibilities

* Monitor and address quality issues; raise risks with relevant parties and follow up on poor performance.
* Inform and influence clinical governance issues; keep the risk register updated and managed.
* Act as a budget holder: authorise and control financial resources, manage staffing budgets and contract agreements.
* Manage staff sickness, performance and provide support to staff when required.
* Plan and organise clinics and monitor activities as needed.
* Develop and promote the service and support clinical audit and research projects.


Professional Responsibilities

* Manage the department on a 7‑day basis, ensuring targets are delivered and implement measures to achieve them.
* Keep department expenditure within the budgetary allowance, identifying problem areas and acting accordingly.
* Plan staff deployment to ensure safe staffing levels and efficient rostering, including annual leave management.
* Identify training and development needs for staff through appraisal and service need.
* Participate in recruitment and selection of staff for the department.
* Support the achievement of performance targets for waiting times.
