Responsibilities

* Post holder is responsible for the performance of the Portering department out of hours through effective management of the shift team.
* Provide services that, at all times, are of the highest quality and delivered at the most economical cost.
* Act as the first line of contact for the department with service users and visitors to the hospital, ensuring all operations are conducted to a high standard of customer care.
* Manage and motivate staff to maintain a high standard of service, supervising all Portering tasks by regular and random checks to ensure correct and timely completion.
* Deploy Portering staff to meet ad‑hoc service demands and prioritise workload so that service meets the expectations of users.
* Liaise with other departments regarding Portering work, investigate any failure to meet schedules, take remedial action, and report to senior management.
* Induct new Portering staff into the organisation and provide training to an acceptable standard.
* Oversee the training and development of all on‑shift staff to maximise departmental efficiency and employee potential.
* Practice effective quality management by implementing and monitoring performance indicators that track department performance and promote continuous improvement.
* Maintain departmental records, both computerised and manual, including daily records of all ad‑hoc tasks undertaken by porters.
* Ensure routine duty schedules are available and review them regularly.
* Provide weekly rosters to staff and cover absences efficiently and cost‑effectively, in line with departmental policy.
* Conduct regular team briefs and facilitate the cascading of relevant information.
* Review team performance through the appraisal process, ensuring staff achieve agreed objectives.
* Carry out annual appraisals for basic‑grade Portering staff in line with Trust procedures for Investors in People.
* Participate in and operate the Trust's disciplinary and sickness procedures, producing reports, investigating issues, and, where appropriate, participating in formal interviews.
* Maintain radio control with porters at all times and ensure adherence to the radio code of practice.
* Carried out regular fire patrols, attend all fire calls, and assist the fire brigade when on site as part of the fire response team.
* Undertake any Portering duties if required.
* Ensure the operation of the department complies with all relevant statutory legislation and local policies on Health and Safety, Personnel Policies, COSHH, Fire Code Standing Orders, and other Trust policies and procedures.
* Maintain equipment used by Portering staff in good working order and arrange appropriate repairs.
* Identify future needs for service users and participate in and lead working groups designed to assist in future service planning under the direction of the Deputy Portering and Distribution Manager.
