LOCUM CONSULTANT IN PAEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY (maternity cover)
A whole‑time post as locum Consultant in Paediatric Oncology is available now at the John Radcliffe Hospital/Children’s Hospital of Oxford. This post covers 12 months of maternity leave.
The post is for 10.0 programmed activities (PAs).
Job Overview
The postholder will work alongside the current permanent staff, three paediatric oncologists and three paediatric haematologists.

Unit Information
The Oxford Paediatric and Adolescent Haematology/Oncology unit provides a world‑class, holistic service for patients within the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance, consisting of Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Swindon. The unit provides all solid tumour oncology, neuro‑oncology, malignant and benign haematology services for the Alliance, apart from allogeneic transplantation. The Oxford PTC unit has Joint Accreditation Committee‑ISCT & EBMT (JACIE) accreditation for the administration of high dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell rescue. Patients requiring allogeneic transplantation are referred to Bristol/London services. The unit provides supraregional support for haemophilia and Haemoglobinopathy services, covering Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Wiltshire.
The Children’s Hospital Oxford (CHOX) at the John Radcliffe Hospital (JRH) Campus is the Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) providing tertiary haematology/oncology services for designated Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCUs) in Swindon, Reading, Milton Keynes, High Wycombe/Stoke Mandeville and Slough (Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospital). The unit has excellent relationships with paediatricians in the POSCUs. Outreach clinics for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology are held at each of the POSCUs.
Responsibilities
* Provide maternity cover from March 2026 for 12 months and join the existing members of the Paediatric Haematology/Oncology team in providing a regional service for children with cancer or haematological disorders.
* Work with the team members in providing an on‑call service with a 1‑in‑6/7 rota.
* Manage patients with solid and CNS tumours, leukaemia and lymphoma aged 0–19 years: initial diagnostic work‑up, planning and delivery of treatment and care.
* Participate in the 1‑in‑6 “consultant of the week” system, providing cross‑cover for in‑patient activity.
* Attend and contribute to the Oxford multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
* Review patients on the day unit, support fellows and staff grades, and independently lead outpatient clinics.
* Be willing to work at the Children’s Hospital Oxford (CHOX) and in any of the Trust’s locations and outreach clinics, as required.

An indicative timetable and Job Plan is outlined on the JD. The final Job plan for the post will be agreed with the clinical director on appointment and will be subject to renegotiation at least annually.

Annual and study leave arrangements must be coordinated within the specialty to ensure an acceptable level of consultant.
