Overview
The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking full-time consultants in anaesthesia (with or without an interest in critical care or obstetrics) to join an inclusive team. The department serves a modern theatre and day surgery complex with ITU and HDU facilities and has a strong teaching focus. Trust status includes Associate Teaching Hospital with the University of Sheffield Medical School.
The post-holder will work alongside a team of 26 consultants and 19 Associate specialists, specialty doctors and clinical fellows, with 12 doctors in training from Health Education England (HEE).
Responsibilities
The successful candidates will share responsibilities within the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine and will provide:
* 8.0 programmed activities (PAs) per week of direct clinical care (DCC)
* 1.0 PA for on-call duties
* Minimum 1.5 PA per week of SPA (Supporting Professional Activities)
* Additional clinical PAs may be available depending on departmental needs; opportunities to take on extra SPA roles aligned with interests and service requirements
Critical Care Unit responsibilities include cover on weekdays by two consultants, with on-call arrangements shared with General Consultants. There is weekend on-call service (1 in 9) with prospective cover, and a resident session on the Critical Care unit 0800–1200 followed by on-call until 2000.
Anaesthetics responsibilities include theatre lists (1.33 PAs per session, ~5 hours each) including 1 hour for pre-operative assessment and post-operative care. Morning lists start at 08:30 and afternoon lists at 13:45. Some lists may be all-day; trauma lists run 13:45–20:30.
Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) cover CPD, appraisal, revalidation, audit, governance, education and training, and other administrative duties required to support revalidation and professional development. Mutual agreement on timetable will be reached with the Clinical Lead, with flexibility to discuss alternatives for specialist interests.
On-call availability: General Anaesthesia & Critical Care on-call rota for out-of-hours emergency work; Category A on-call with a 3% pay supplement and ~1.0 PA per week on average.
Teaching and training: participate in teaching and training of resident staff, medical students and other clinical staff; supervision responsibilities for resident medical staff may be possible.
Study and training: ongoing professional medical education; study leave is available through the Trust Study Leave Committee.
Appraisal, revalidation & mandatory training: mandatory annual appraisal and CPD for revalidation; attendance at required mandatory training.

Person Specification
Ability and Skills (Essential):
* Further experience in specialist areas pertinent to the post
* Some knowledge of IT in clinical practice
Qualifications (Essential):
* Full GMC registration and licence to practise
* Eligible for Specialist Register – CCT expected within 6 months of interview date or evidence of CESR submission within 6 months of Specialist Registration via CESR
* MBBS or equivalent; FRCA or equivalent
* For Critical Care interest, FFICM by examination and/or CCT in Critical Care must be confirmed
Desirable:
* Higher Medical Degree
Experience (Essential):
* Satisfactory ARCP or equivalent; subspecialty training in ITU/ICM if applying for ITU post
Research and Audit (Essential):
* Trained in research methodology; committed to evidence-based practice; evidence of audit and implementation of changes
Desirable:
* Relevant research published in peer-reviewed journals
Education and Training (Essential):
