Overview
The Clinical Chemistry Department, alongside the Research & Development Department at Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospitals, is looking to recruit a Band 5/6 Biomedical Scientist with laboratory experience. Appointment to Band 6 requires completion of a Specialist IBMS Portfolio (Band 5 considered with view to progressing on portfolio completion). Applicants must be HCPC registered and have relevant post‑registration experience in a UK Pathology department.
Responsibilities
As a Support Biomedical Scientist, you will play a vital role in enabling high‑quality clinical studies that improve care for mothers, babies and young people. The role involves supporting the delivery of research by setting up and reviewing studies, preparing samples, maintaining study documentation, ensuring smooth laboratory processes, and implementing study‑specific procedures. This varied role combines core laboratory skills with research set‑up and delivery knowledge, contributing to innovative research in a fast‑paced, patient‑focused environment.
Office‑based duties, predominantly non‑laboratory, cover both Children's and Women's Hospitals. The successful candidate will have previous Pathology experience and maintain professional standards and up‑to‑date knowledge of current practices.
Qualifications and experience
* HCPC registration
* Previous experience in a UK laboratory
* Knowledge and practical skills in Clinical Chemistry
* MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent
* Knowledge of Research and Development
* Basic understanding of Chemistry
* Knowledge of Quality Assurance, audit practices, laboratory accreditation, HCPC, IBMS standards and laboratory health & safety
* Experience with Microsoft Windows and a LIMS
* Strong analytical skills to process and interpret data for accurate diagnostic tests
Professional requirements
Appointment to Band 6 will require an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Chemistry. Band 5 is considered for candidates with the portfolio pending.
