Job type: Permanent / Full-time
Sector and subsector: Online/Print Media | General
AnnualFixed salary:£ 38000.00
Job Title: Deputy Digital Editor
Dept: BBC Science Focus
Company description:
Our Media is a leading special-interest content business, based in the buzzing, creative city of Bristol. We're home to market-leading brands in craft, cycling, science and nature, homes and music.
We help our audiences pursue their passions through highly trusted, original content – in print, video and online. Our much-loved brands include BBC Science Focus, BBC Wildlife Magazine, YourHome, Gathered.how, BikeRadar and Cycling Plus.
We also have an award-winning content agency that works with major charities, brands and membership organisations to help them tell their stories and engage audiences better – in print, video, and online.
Position:
We're looking for a creative and ambitious Deputy Digital Editor to help grow the UK's biggest and best science magazine.
The ideal candidate will be a journalist and editor with a strong instinct for what makes online content successful, and the versatility to deliver it every day – whether that means editing a fast-moving news story, landing expert comment on the day’s biggest talking point or transforming an idea into a compelling longer read.
Your responsibilities will be split between commissioning and editing a batch of digital features every month, editing the magazine and website’s news output and supporting the digital editor to manage our digital platforms.
This would suit a journalist with experience working on digital content – especially if you’ve got a track record of growing audiences on the platforms you’ve worked on. It’ll also be useful if you’ve commissioned and edited long-form copy to create brilliant features.
There’s room to develop, too. With plenty of projects in the pipeline, there’ll be opportunities to get involved in podcasts, video and new formats over time.
A background in science isn’t essential, though it will help. More important is a sharp journalistic instinct and a genuine sense of what matters in science and the wider world right now. As important as your ability to generate ideas is a sense of how you’re going to execute them within a deadline – knowing which angle, headline and images will grab readers.
Responsibilities:
* Generate ideas for timely news, features and stories hooked into the biggest talking points of the day
* Lead the production of a monthly digital issue, commissioning and editing standout features
* Edit and publish news stories and short and long-form features, writing when required
* Curate and contribute to news content across platforms, including supporting the print magazine
* Support the Digital Editor with the day-to-day running of the site, stepping up to lead when needed
* Ensure all content is accurate, engaging, and meets editorial standards
About you:
* A driven journalist who can come up with brilliant, original content ideas and angles that will work well across our digital channel
* Web literate, with a strong understanding of how to create engaging digital content that works for both readers and platforms such as Google and Apple News
* Comfortable working with content management systems and digital publishing tools
* An eye for what makes a great science story and what angle Science Focus should take on it
* A confident communicator who is happy working with different teams – internal and external, to produce brilliant content
* Ability to chase experts and interviewees, to get the access and insight our readers want
* Visual thinker: able to digest data and marry images, infographics and copy to convey ideas
* Experience writing and editing for magazines and/or websites
* Able to build and grow their own work streams in order to get new projects up and running
* Organised and proactive, able to juggle multiple stories, deadlines and workflows at once
* Comfortable using collaborative organisation systems to manage editorial workflows and keep projects moving smoothly across teams
Preferred:
* A background in science or science journalism
* Confident with Photoshop and other Adobe software
* Confident in managing the production process behind digital issues
