Giving and Generosity Support Officer role at The Church of England Birmingham (CofEB).
Background
The Church of England Birmingham (CofEB) is on a journey of growing churches at the heart of every community. Financially, CofEB is at a challenging point and working with the National Church through the Diocesan Investment Programme to increase Common Fund returns and reallocate income to support economically deprived parishes. The team will develop long‑term relationships with parishes to enable growth in generosity and funding while aligning with CofEB strategy.
Job purpose
The primary focus of this role is to support the wider team in delivering CofEB’s generosity project. The Head of Generosity will lead the team; the Giving & Generosity Officer will work alongside two Giving & Generosity Advisors to engage parishes through in‑person meetings and coordinated activity across CofEB teams.
Key responsibilities
* Be the point of contact for parishes and other Diocesan Board of Finance (DBF) teams; primarily office based.
* Develop strong relationships with parishes and stakeholders to enable meetings and support around generosity.
* Be the first point of contact for questions around Giving and Generosity.
* Manage activities and processes that enable the project to function (e.g., a scheme to loan out contact giving devices).
* Support in creating resources and communication pieces.
* Maintain external and internal communications across CofEB channels (website, prayers, etc.).
* Encourage and assist parishes in implementing the Parish Giving Scheme and contactless giving mechanisms, with related diocesan resources.
* Support scheduling and delivery of training for clergy, treasurers and others.
* Manage data and information to track progress and evidence of impact.
* Undertake resource projects and support the Head of Generosity in responding to new needs and opportunities.
* Ensure regular team meetings and effective internal communication; coordinate team wellbeing activities in line with CofEB rhythms.
Person specification
Essential Qualifications & Experience
* Some understanding of church governance structures and financial operations and requirements.
* Knowledge of generosity principles and Christian financial stewardship.
* Experience of working in a sensitive environment and handling confidential matters with tact and diplomacy.
* Experience of supporting a team and running the processes required to do this.
Essential Skills & Attributes
* Attention to detail and accuracy.
* Good experience in Microsoft Office; familiarity with project management software is an advantage.
* Excellent planning and organisational skills.
* Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to handle queries from a wide range of people at different levels using various mediums.
* Experience handling sensitive information with discretion.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team; flexible and adaptable to changing priorities.
* Understanding of and sympathy with Christian ethos and values.
Terms and conditions
The post is employed by the Diocesan Board of Finance for a fixed term ending on 2 November 2030, subject to funding. Salary: £28,000 plus 12% employer contribution to the Church Worker’s Pension Scheme. Full-time 35 hours per week; weekend/evening work may be required with time off in lieu. Flexible working can be considered.
Holidays: 5 weeks per year plus Bank Holidays and 3 discretionary days between Christmas and New Year. Employer: Birmingham Diocesan Board of Finance. Responsible To: Head of Generosity.
