Overview
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
The role
The Medical Laboratory Assistant post is a critical component of the Laboratory Service. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing the pre-analytical preparation of diagnostic specimens arriving to the laboratory, as well as a range of other tasks and duties relevant to the role such as data entry, stock management and support for the department’s QMS.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
* Location based at Inverclyde Royal Hospital
* Working three set days per week between 08:30 and 17:00, but may be required to rotate to the Royal Alexandra Hospital based on operational requirements.
* Part-time position (22.2 hours per week)
* Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.
Key responsibilities
* Will work under supervision at all times to strict protocols and guidelines.
* On receipt of patient samples ensure that they are correctly and uniquely identified.
* Centrifuge samples, according to standard operating procedure.
* Separate, aliquot and dilute samples, in preparation for analysis.
* Cleaning and sterilisation of reception benches and centrifuges.
* Carry out and document all maintenance procedures associated with reception.
* Measure, aliquot, and dispose of 24-hour urines.
* Undertake the storage of specimens, and safe disposal of all biological specimens as per agreed health and safety regulations.
* Check Reception fridge and freezer temperatures daily.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required
* 3 Highers at Grade C or above, including either Chemistry or Biology together with Maths, or SVQ3 in relevant science subject, or Completion of modern apprenticeship in life sciences, or Completion of equivalent accredited education / learning
* Evidence of good numeracy and literacy skills required.
* Extensive knowledge of computer input data codes, acquired through on-job training and experience
* Basic computer knowledge.
* Good keyboard skills.
* Accuracy in all aspects of assigned duties.
* Ability to work as part of a team in a busy Reception area.
