The Assistant Tax Manager will be responsible for managing complex tax matters for internationally mobile individuals and expatriates. This role requires strong technical knowledge of both US and UK tax systems, together with experience supporting clients with cross-border tax compliance and advisory matters.
The position combines technical tax work, client relationship management, team development, and contributions to operational improvements and business growth initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance
- Manage the preparation and review of US and UK personal tax returns and associated international information reporting requirements.
- Ensure the timely submission of tax returns, estimates, elections, and extensions for clients with multi-jurisdictional tax obligations.
- Lead the preparation and coordination of voluntary disclosure and tax regularisation processes for clients with historic filing obligations.
- Prepare responses and supporting documentation for tax authority enquiries and compliance reviews.
- Support senior team members with technical research, consultations, and prospective client engagements.
- Advise clients on tax-efficient structures, international investment considerations, and cross-border tax implications.
- Assist with the preparation of technical memoranda and written advice on a variety of international tax matters, including residence and treaty-related issues.
- Support advisory projects involving US and UK tax legislation, international reporting requirements, and expatriate tax matters.
Client Relationship Management
- Act as the primary point of contact for an allocated portfolio of clients.
- Deliver a high level of client service, responding to tax-related queries in a timely and professional manner.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships to support long-term engagement and client satisfaction.
- Supervise and mentor junior team members, providing technical guidance and support.
- Review work prepared by junior colleagues to ensure quality, accuracy, and compliance.
- Assist with training and development initiatives to enhance technical knowledge across the team.
- Support team leaders in maintaining a high-performing and collaborative working environment.
- Provide leadership support and act as a deputy when required.
Skills & Experience
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Experience in personal tax, with a focus on US and UK tax compliance and advisory services.
- Strong technical knowledge of US and UK tax systems, including international tax considerations and treaty provisions.
- Understanding of tax implications relating to overseas companies, foreign investments, and cross-border structures.
- Experience working towards or holding a relevant professional tax qualification (e.g. Enrolled Agent, ATT, CTA or equivalent).
- Familiarity with professional tax software and digital tax compliance systems.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters clearly to clients and colleagues.
- Ability to manage multiple client deadlines and priorities effectively.
- A collaborative approach and enthusiasm for working within a team-oriented environment.
