We’re creating an environment where brilliant minds from all backgrounds collaborate to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Founded to commercialise research generated over the last decade at the Cavendish Laboratory, Nu Quantum is on a mission to shape the future of quantum information systems. We’re working on exciting technology that will improve the utility and accelerate the time-to-market of quantum computing systems. We integrate novel quantum photonic technology to form an efficient and scalable quantum networking infrastructure in partnership with world-leading companies and academic groups. Nu Quantum is looking for a Nanofabrication Engineer to join our growing team, tackling exciting problems to make scalable quantum computing a reality. About the role We are looking for a Nanofabrication Engineer/Senior Nanofabrication Engineer (depending on experience) to accelerate the development of our quantum networking technology. These form a core part of our hardware R&D efforts, and their performance is crucial to reaching the rate and fidelity required for multi-core quantum computing. You would join our highly motivated and multi-disciplinary Photonics Systems team, with expertise across engineering design, optics, integrated photonics, and nanofabrication. Your role would initially focus on development and testing of a bespoke MEMS actuator which is a critical component for Nu Quantum next generation Qubit Photon Interface (QPI) device. What you'll be doing: Develop, test and optimise bespoke MEMS actuator and miniaturized optical cavity module devices in line with specifications required for Nu Quantum’s next generation Qubit Photon Interface design. Develop, test and optimise high-precision assembly processes to align and assemble miniaturized optical elements. Define and refine the microfabrication flow in collaboration with external foundry suppliers and internal process engineers. Coordinate design-test-build development cycles to meet project deliverable timeline and quality standards, including tasks such as parts inventory management, test planning, database management and technical reporting. Requirements What we're looking for Qualifications, Skills and Experience: Postgraduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience. General hands-on experience with cleanroom processes, such as wet chemistry, photolithography, plasma etching, thin-film deposition and substrate dicing. Able to work in a shared cleanroom environment. Technical expertise in one or more of the following areas: Proficiency in multi-physics simulation software (COMSOL / Ansys), layout tools (KLayout), and CAD tools (SolidWorks). Experience with design, tape-out, packaging and testing of MEMS flexure devices. Expertise in high-precision semiconductor / photonics assembly and packaging, such as wafer-level handling, parts singulation, active optical alignment and bonding techniques. Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and communication skills (verbal and written) for successful multi-disciplinary group interactions. The ability to adapt and work both autonomously and as part of a small team. Experience with some of the following is not necessary but a bonus: Previous experience with fabrication of optical microcavities. Knowledge of quantum optics or cavity quantum electrodynamics. Experience in Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis tools like Python / JMP / R to ensure test results are reliable and repeatable. Experience with 3D forming manufacturing techniques, such as selective laser etching, 2-photon polymerisation, advanced 3D printing. Benefits Why work with us? At Nu Quantum, we celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where people of all identities, orientations, backgrounds, and experiences are empowered. We value diverse perspectives as a source of creativity and innovation and encourage applications from all backgrounds, including those from underrepresented and marginalised communities. Joining Nu Quantum means joining a team where you can grow professionally and be part of an inspiring mission to shape the future of technology. Benefits Refreshments, including fruit and beverages, are available in the office.
