Mechanical Design Engineer – Nuclear Sector

Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support major nuclear engineering and energy infrastructure projects across the UK. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing high-quality mechanical designs, supporting system integration, and ensuring compliance with nuclear safety, regulatory, and quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities

Produce, review, and validate mechanical designs, drawings, 3D models, system diagrams, and technical specifications.

Carry out engineering calculations, stress assessments, thermodynamic analysis, and design substantiation.
*
Manage design changes, technical queries, and engineering documentation in line with nuclear governance and configuration-control processes.
*
Work collaboratively with civil, electrical, and systems engineers to integrate mechanical equipment into complex plant environments.
*
Participate in design reviews, HAZOP/HAZID studies, risk assessments, and quality checks.
*
Liaise with suppliers, contractors, and project stakeholders to resolve design issues and confirm technical solutions.
*
Ensure all engineering activities comply with nuclear safety standards, regulatory requirements, and quality assurance procedures.
*
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support the development of efficient design processes.
Required Skills & Experience
*
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
*
Minimum of 3 years’ experience within the nuclear sector (new build, operations, decommissioning, or safety-critical design).
*
Proven experience with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, CATIA, AutoCAD, or Aveva E3D.
*
Strong understanding of nuclear safety rules, quality processes, and engineering standards.
*
Knowledge of pressure systems, rotating equipment, piping, HVAC, or other mechanical plant systems.
*
Excellent communication, report writing, and technical problem-solving skills.
*
Ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
Desirable
*
Familiarity with nuclear design codes (e.g., RCC-M, ASME, PED).
*
Experience with configuration management and interface management.
*
Chartered or working towards CEng status (IMechE or equivalent).
