Maternity Support Workers assist with caring for women, babies and their families throughout their maternity journey, working under supervision and within agreed guidelines and protocols when providing care to women and their families (definition of a Maternity Support Worker – HEE, Maternity Support Worker Competency, Education and Career Development Framework).
Maternity Support Worker (Band 2) is expected to hold a Care Certificate.
Maternity Support Workers (Band 2) use general skills to enhance the service offered to women and their families across a range of aspects of maternity service delivery under the close supervision of a registrant, ordinarily a midwife, nurse or Band practitioner.
You will be part of a team based at ELHT working flexibly within the hospital and community setting covering various shift patterns.
You will be expected to undertake appropriate learning, practice and reflection.
There will be a period of competency-based training both initially and over the first year of employment which you must complete in order to perform all the duties of the job to the required standard.
Main duties of the job
To provide advice as appropriate within own sphere/limitations of practice.
o To provide care that ensures the privacy and dignity, and comfort of women
o To transfer/escort women to other areas of ELHT services
o Maintain clear, accurate, legible and timely written documentation in women’s maternity records, observing and reporting any changes in a woman’s condition to the Midwife.
o To follow the Area Child Protection Committee guidelines and to be aware of Child Protection issues.
o Be able to respond calmly in an emergency situation assisting the midwife with obstetric and neonatal emergencies. Have an understanding of the procedures to summon clinical and ambulance support.
o Ensure all patients nutritional requirements are met
o Ensure all patients privacy and dignity is respected at all times
o Provide skilled breastfeeding support following the appropriate training if required.
o To provide midwifery support throughout the patient journey of operative procedures. This duty will take place within a hospital theatre setting.
o To provide midwifery support within the birth Centre or birth suite settings as this where the post are available Ward environment
