This role will be the key technical subject matter expert for LV, HV and EHV network design across a nationwide portfolio of new distribution network assets. As the SME you will act as a decision maker on engineering matters (engineering assurance sign off) within the Sphere team and provide key guidance to the Sphere Leadership team.

Additionally, you will be the main liaison with the wider Distribution Network Operator (DNO) community and be responsible for working‑level industry engagement with bodies such as the Energy Networks Association (ENA).

As the Sphere IDNO grows, you will manage customer requests to connect, alter, or extend the Sphere network.

What you’ll be doing

* Lead on engineering design to facilitate the construction of new IDNO assets through relationships with ICP contractors, including establishing and evolving strategy and processes to ensure a consistent approach to design, health and safety management, land rights and project delivery.

* Manage different sized ICP contractors, ensuring a standardised design approach across the entire portfolio of sites is adopted by Sphere.
* Propose new and advanced engineering solutions with ICPs to enable accelerated delivery of projects.
* Ensure that Sphere Design Philosophy & Principles and policies are adhered to by ICPs.
* Participate and direct cross‑discipline transfer of expertise with fellow Sphere colleagues, acting as a key link for interaction with other departments and enabling holistic technical decisions.
* Lead engineering governance, assurance and approval for design submissions made by ICPs, with thorough attention to detail in the development of new network assets for Sphere adoption, including holding delegated authorisation responsibility.
* Provide engineering oversight and troubleshooting for complex engineering problems, both in the construction of new assets and for the connected assets of Sphere once constructed.
* Represent Sphere’s engineering position and interests at senior industry, regulatory and public consultations where required.
* Set and maintain company‑wide professional engineering working standards, practices and pace of delivery, acting as an engineering role‑model and encouraging technical rigour.

What you’ll bring

* Engineering qualification (BSc/BEng) or relevant experience, with postgraduate qualification preferred (MBA, Meng, MSc).
* Proven experience of distribution network design and construction planning with expert knowledge of design standards up to 33kV.
* Good commercial awareness with the ability to balance customer service and efficient network design whilst ensuring maximum return on investment.
* Technical and operational experience in a relevant engineering role within a utility environment. Experience of working with the National Electricity Registration Scheme (NERS) preferred.
* Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to prioritise and manage a diverse and demanding workload whilst under pressure.
* Direct or indirect line management and leadership experience.
* Capability to manage and influence challenging discussions or situations with internal and external relationships.
