Job summary
The post holder will be responsible for the provision of a highly specialised clinical ultrasound service ensuring effective patient treatment and diagnosis across the UHB NHS Trust.
The post holder will meet operational standards to ensure effective and progressive service delivery. They will be responsible for managing and prioritising workload and to produce comprehensive independent reports. The post holder will work within professional boundaries to improve patient outcomes and take part in the training of others in the specialised field of ultrasound.
In addition to the delivery of the ultrasound service, the post holder will be responsible for
* Training and development of appropriate staff in all aspects of clinical service
* Development and implementation of U/S protocols
* Contribution to research and development
* Participation in extended service
* Promotion of service and Imaging standards
* Participation in audit and research
Main duties of the job
CLINICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
*To be thoroughly familiar with all aspects of the clinical skills required and the operation of all ultrasound scanners demonstrating expertise in clinical practice and highly specialist knowledge and to give specialised advice to Radiologists, Sonographers, Radiographers and the multidisciplinary team on all aspects of ultrasound.
*To independently compose using analytical and judgement skills, written reports for diagnosis/treatment for a range of ultrasound examinations in line with guidelines and protocols.
*To work autonomously when justifying relevance of requests, taking into account previous examinations, reports and clinical history.
*To use analytical and judgement skills to interpret highly complex images, where accuracy is required to differentiate between normal and pathological findings.
*To have a well-developed hand/eye co-ordination combined with spatial awareness which enables precise acquisition of diagnostic images.
*To contribute to the development and implementation of ultrasound protocols, procedures and techniques in conjunction with Radiologists and evidence based advances in practice.
*To ensure the clinical indications for the examination are appropriate and within the guidelines laid down within the department protocols.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
1. Educated to degree level or equivalent, have a post graduate accredited qualification in medical ultrasound
2. Must be state registered
Experience
Essential
3. Must have relevant skills/knowledge/experience in the range of ultrasound techniques which are required
Desirable
4. IT experience to use the necessary computerised reporting system and image recording system
5. Must be prepared to assist with the development of the service and protocols
Additional Criteria
Essential
6. Must be able to work independently and be competent to write a concise and accurate report
7. Must be prepared to provide practical and theoretical training in medical ultrasound and take responsibility for countersigning reports for Clinicians, Midwives and Radiographers in training
8. Must be prepared to continue with professional development to ensure a high standard of ultrasound examinations
9. To possess a full understanding of ethical and moral issues to enable delivery of bad news to patients in an appropriate/empathetic manner
10. Must be able to work effectively in a potentially high pressured, emotive environment
11. Must be committed to providing a high quality US service
