Amazon is looking for a talented and self‑motivated Senior Regional Environmental Manager – EMEA to lead the environmental team across Europe, Middle East, and Africa. The successful candidate will join the AWS Environmental team, ensuring regulatory compliance and high environmental performance for AWS’s data center global operations while driving the full environmental lifecycle from site selection through decommissioning.
Key job responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
* Directly manage multiple Regional Environmental Managers and Regional Environmental Engineers across the EMEA region, providing coaching, performance management, and career development.
* Set strategic direction for the EMEA regional environmental teams, spanning infrastructure development, operational compliance, and environmental programs.
* Hire, develop, and promote talent; build a high‑performing, regionally distributed environmental team.
* Serve as a key member of the Global Environmental leadership team, contributing to global strategy and driving cross‑regional best practice sharing.
Infrastructure Development & Permitting
* Oversee the environmental requirements for the full lifecycle of AWS data center site acquisition and development across EMEA.
* Lead and manage environmental due diligence activities, including Phase I and Phase II ESAs, brownfield redevelopment evaluations, health‑risk assessments, and liability management.
* Develop and execute regional and site‑specific permitting and site‑management strategies to enable on‑time, compliant construction and operations.
* Coordinate and lead regulatory agency interactions and negotiations in support of permit acquisition.
* Coordinate with partner teams to optimize site master plans for environmentally sensitive areas and timely project delivery.
* Assess environmental risks, develop mitigations, and conduct natural, biological, and cultural resource evaluations.
Environmental Compliance
* Hold ultimate responsibility for managing environmental compliance across all EMEA operational data centers.
* Develop and influence regional and global internal standards and policies to support regulatory compliance.
* Provide technical support and execute tactical compliance tasks.
* Perform complex technical research and regulatory analysis on emerging compliance needs.
* Maintain expert understanding of EMEA regulations and global standards.
Strategy & Program Management
* Improve public perception and manage community interactions to support permitting, development, and operations.
* Lead external strategy initiatives, engage regulators and stakeholders, and design environmental assessment programs.
* Drive implementation of process improvement opportunities and efficiency initiatives.
* Develop, manage, and track metrics to evaluate project delivery and environmental performance.
* Manage complex problems, decisions, and escalations, balancing short‑ and long‑term needs.
* Negotiate with regulators to clarify ambiguous regulations and provide technical input to advocacy efforts.
* Document issues in standard reporting tools and drive resolution.
Stakeholder Engagement
* Partner with AWS stakeholders across Real Estate, Legal, Risk, Water, Design, Public Policy, Construction, and Operational teams.
* Engage with external stakeholders such as regulatory agencies, environmental consultants, and contractors.
* Be recognized regionally as a subject‑matter expert (SME).
Basic Qualifications
* Experience leading large teams, with demonstrable ability to hire, develop, and manage high‑performing technical teams.
* Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, geology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
* 15+ years of multi‑media environmental due diligence, permitting, and compliance experience for existing sites and new development.
* 10+ years of progressive experience delivering transactional Phase I and Phase II ESAs, site investigation, remediation, and brownfield development in EMEA.
* 7+ years of people‑management experience leading geographically distributed teams.
* Experience developing programmatic approaches and tools to evaluate and manage environmental risks and a contaminated site portfolio.
* Experience with controls and financial reporting in accordance with the Sarbanes‑Oxley Act for remedial activities.
* Proven track record of delivering multiple, high‑priority projects with tight timelines.
* Demonstrated ability to partner cross‑functionally to accomplish strategic initiatives and multi‑year plans to improve corporate environmental performance.
Preferred Qualifications
* Advanced degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related field and/or professional certifications such as PE, PG, CHMM, or equivalent.
* EMEA site investigation, remediation, and/or development experience, including large‑scale, complex redevelopments.
* Data center or critical infrastructure due diligence, design, construction, and risk assessment experience.
* Established relationships with existing and emerging environmental requirements throughout EMEA.
* Experience managing or supporting community/public interactions.
* Experience working with large, geographically distributed teams on diverse projects.
