NORTHERN IRELAND AUTHORITY FOR UTILITY REGULATION (The Utility Regulator) PROTECTING THE INTERESTS OF NORTHERN IRELAND’S ENERGY AND WATER CONSUMERS THROUGH EFFECTIVE ECONOMIC REGULATION Appointment of Non-Executive Chair and Board Member The Department of Finance is seeking to appoint new members to the Board of the Utility Regulator, the non-ministerial government department responsible for the economic regulation of the electricity & gas industries and water & sewerage services in Northern Ireland. The Utility Regulator is currently the economic regulator for the electricity and natural gas industries, however, inevitably, as the energy sector is decarbonised its responsibilities will extend to other fuels and infrastructure such as heat networks. Currently the value of the energy and water assets and businesses under regulatory scrutiny stretches to more than £3 billion, which may, over years double. These roles are hugely important to the delivery of a healthier and more prosperous society. The appointments come at an exciting time for the Utility Regulator which is central to protecting energy consumers in the transition from fossil fuels to achieving net zero emission targets; and ensuring that business and domestic consumers alike pay a fair price for their energy.
