Job Description

We are recruiting for a Track Specialist Design Manager to join the HS2 Track infrastructure project at the initial design phase, running concurrently with the completion of main works contracts. Reporting to the Engineering Leadership, you’ll work closely with the Design and Delivery Teams, external design partners and Alliance members to develop and manage the design for Temporary Railheads, Resilient Track and Switches & Crossings (S&C). The role will be based in London or Birmingham and will require attending weekly meetings with the broader team and/or client in Birmingham/London.

Your mission

As a Design Manager, you will be responsible for the following:

* Establish and promote best practice in health, safety, sustainability, cost, time, buildability and appropriate quality matters.
* Manage the design process to ensure safety, buildability, contract compliance, and timely delivery within budget.
* Promote engineering excellence and modern methods of construction to add value to design development.
* Implement 3D design delivery strategy to inform BEP requirements.
* Input into internal, client and external engineering workshops and steering groups.
* Perform reviews of technical proposals.
* Develop and maintain awareness of SHE hazards and mitigate risks.
* Manage design programme, monitoring and reporting via progress meetings.
* Obtain relevant documentation and approvals from stakeholders.
* Interface with NR and other relevant stakeholders as required.
* Provide expert guidance and technical support to identify and mitigate risks and ensure Works Information compliance.
* Identify opportunities to improve safety, buildability, quality, and value.
* Coordinate the design process and manage change.
* Organise design coordination and progress meetings with the design team and specialist supply chain partners, ensuring design risk assessments are produced.
* Prepare minutes, notes and reports to ensure effective communication and records.
* Manage the document control process with support from a document controller.
* Maintain a professional approach with clients, professional teams, sub-contractors and suppliers.
* Manage other junior team members who may report into this role.


Who are we looking for?

Minimum Requirements for the Position

* Strong management skills with a positive and collaborative approach.
* Enthusiastic team player, able to listen, engage, motivate, and make decisions when required.
* Degree qualification in civil or mechanical engineering, or equivalent.
* Professionally Qualified, preferably Chartered Engineer.
* Extensive experience in design and construction of ballasted and ballastless track; resilient slab track experience is a plus.
* Experience in design and construction of Switches and Crossings.
* Experience in managing design and construction interfaces between track systems and other railway systems.
* Knowledge of track design procedures and standards.
* Ability to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment.
* Knowledge of design office work processes and successful design delivery coordination.
* Strong commercial understanding of contracts, procurement routes and risk management.
* Good collaborative planning skills.
* Thorough understanding of 3D design and BIM, with a drive to improve through digital construction.
* Excellent communication skills, both personally and in formal reporting.
* Practical experience in harmonising design and quality with buildability and problem solving.
