Job Role: Functional Skills English Tutor Location: HMYOI Werrington Salary: From £30,000 per annum (dependent on experience, skills & qualifications) Contract: Full‑Time, Permanent Working Environment: Prison‑based role with full on‑site delivery Role Overview We are seeking an experienced and passionate Functional Skills English Tutor to deliver high‑quality English programmes to learners at HMYOI Werrington. Working with small groups of young learners, you will support the development of essential English skills, helping learners build confidence, improve literacy, and progress towards recognised qualifications. Your teaching will play a vital role in supporting rehabilitation, personal development and future employability. You will design structured sessions, provide ongoing advice and guidance, and ensure that all teaching meets quality, safeguarding and compliance expectations. Key Responsibilities Teaching & Learning Delivery Deliver engaging Functional Skills English sessions to small groups of learners. - Teach across a range of levels, adapting delivery to suit differing learning needs and abilities. - Develop learners' reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. - Plan, prepare and deliver high‑quality lessons aligned to curriculum and qualification requirements. - Provide clear, constructive and motivational feedback to support learner progress. Learner Support & Progression Design and implement individual learning plans (ILPs) for each learner. - Provide advice, encouragement and guidance throughout the programme. - Support learners in developing confidence, resilience and wider employability‑related communication skills. - Track, review and record learner progress in line with quality standards. Quality, Compliance & Collaboration Maintain accurate records in line with internal and external requirements. - Ensure all teaching is compliant with safeguarding, equality, diversity and health & safety standards. - Contribute to continuous improvement and curriculum development activities. - Work effectively with colleagues and prison staff to support smooth delivery and learner success. Essential Criteria Minimum Level 3 qualification in English (or equivalent). - Strong subject knowledge and confidence delivering English‑based learning. - Experience delivering training, tutoring or educational support. - Ability to use a variety of teaching strategies to engage learners effectively. - Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills. - Proactive, learner‑centred approach to teaching. Desirable Criteria Recognised teaching or assessing qualification (e.g., AET, PTLLS, TAQA). - Experience working within prison education or alternative learning environments. - Desire to work towards further teaching or assessing qualifications (support provided).
