Job overview

The successful candidate will be able to work effectively as a Clinical Lead/Ward Manager, have excellent communication skills, welcome a challenge and have a real desire to make a difference to the care we provide to the adult age group inclusive of evolving models of care and modernisation of mental health services.

The successful candidate must have previous experience in a clinical leadership role on an adult acute ward (minimum Band 6) for at least two years and must have the ability to effectively manage a clinical area.


Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities of the Post:

· To ensure practice is delivered safely in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct, the policies and procedures of Pennine care NHS Foundation Trust, Mental Health Act and Community Care legislation.

* To be a visible and proactive clinical leader and role model within the multidisciplinary team and actively participate in the delivery of clinical care on the ward.
* To ensure that patients, their families and carers are directly involved in decisions which affect their care.
* To maintain personal contact with patients, their relatives and carers. Being sensitive to their needs for respect, privacy and dignity and to act as a senior point of contact on the ward.
* To initiate patient focussed interventions and developments, which reflect social, cultural and spiritual needs.

· To provide clinical and managerial supervision for the nursing team on the ward or ensure that it is provided by junior staff.

* To ensure that high standards of record keeping, patient assessment, care planning, risk assessment and management are delivered on the ward in accordance with the Care Programme Approach.
* To participate in programmes of audit activities required by the Acute Services Manager.

· To lead or participate in programmes of work as required by the Acute Care Forum.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Requirements of the Person Specification:

The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic and flexible in approach and must have a first level registration (RNMH).

You will have experience of working in acute in-patient mental health settings at Band 6 or above for a minimum of 2 years and a comprehensive understanding of Mental Illness, knowledge of treatments and interventions appropriate for individuals with acute mental health needs.

You must have strong evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

You should have the ability to demonstrate a working knowledge of the Mental Health Act and CPA process and knowledge of current policy and guidance in relation to the development of Acute Mental Health Services.

Education / Qualifications


Essential criteria

* Diploma or Degree in Mental Health profession e.g. RMN RGN DipSW
* Evidence of post qualification academic achievement or equivalent experience in the relevant area for this post
* Must have an excellent understanding of both numeracy and English language skills.
* Certificate in Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA).


Desirable criteria

* Degree level qualification
* IT Proficient

Essential criteria

* Evidence of supervision of qualified junior staff
* Experience of MDT working.
* Adult Acute Ward experience at Band 6 and / or evidence of appropriate clinical management experience at Band 6.
* Must have the ability to effectively manage a clinical area.
* Proven ability to contribute to the development of  Experience of ward management.  Application Form  Interview AFC 15/02/19 JME-112-19 Ward Manager – Adult Wards Band 7 specialist protocols and practice changes arising from audits and adhere to all SMH policies and procedures.
* Evidence of being able to lead in and assist others in audits, surveys, research and development
* Ability to communicate complex and highly sensitive information to patients and relatives using empathy and reassurance, gain cooperation where required and overcome barriers to understanding.

Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Sound understanding of current government policies in relation to Acute Care including National Guidance, MHA, Risk Assessment, Risk Management processes
* Good working knowledge of assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation processes.
* Knowledge of Performance and development review (MYC)


Desirable criteria

* Knowledge of psychosocial assessment tools and brief psychosocial interventions.
* Knowledge of a range of management approaches.

* Demonstrate an awareness of clinical governance and risk management and how this effects their role and the department
* Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients and give relevant advice / information to patients and relatives
* Ability to make judgements related to symptom management of patients that involve complex facts or situations, analysing what is needed and comparing a range of options.
* Effective multi -professional working
* Able to work under pressure

* Use of a car or access to a means of mobility to travel across the Trust footprint in line with service needs
