About This Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Technical Team Leader to join our Psychology Technical Team within the College of Health, Science and Society. This role plays a vital part in supporting teaching, learning, and research in the School of Social Sciences. You will lead a small team, manage specialist laboratories, and work closely with academic colleagues to deliver high-quality technical support and foster innovative practice.

Key Responsibilities

As Technical Team Leader, you will take responsibility for the psychology technical area and ensure that team members understand and achieve their objectives through effective induction, training, coaching, and regular performance reviews. You will plan and organise technical support for practical classes and projects, ensuring that deadlines are met and standards maintained. Working in partnership with academic and professional services colleagues, you will help develop and implement inclusive, practice-based approaches to teaching and research.

Managing resources will be a key part of the role, including overseeing consumables and equipment, ensuring they are maintained and deployed effectively, and advising on procurement by liaising with manufacturers and suppliers and making recommendations to budget holders. You will also design and deliver training and instruction to students in specialist spaces and laboratories, assessing practical skills within a competency framework aligned to programme learning outcomes. Using your specialist knowledge, you will contribute to programme and school objectives and projects.

Health, safety, wellbeing, and security arrangements for the technical area will fall under your responsibility, ensuring compliance with university and legal requirements and escalating issues as needed. You will represent the Psychology Technical Team at management meetings and college initiatives and commit to gaining HEA Fellowship as part of your professional development.

About You

Good leadership and organisational skills, with the ability to support and guide others while managing priorities effectively. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are important for working collaboratively with staff and students. You should be confident in problem‑solving, have attention to detail, and be comfortable managing technical environments. Knowledge of psychology techniques and equipment is essential, along with a flexible approach and a commitment to continuous improvement.
