Job Description:
Job Purpose
Great Britain's electricity system is undergoing an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system that protects the planet and serves future generations.
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) is taking on the new role of Regional Energy Strategic Planner. We will develop Regional Energy Strategic Plans (RESPs) for 11 regions across Great Britain, empowered through recent Ofgem decisions and ongoing consultations.
The Wales Energy Strategic Planning Lead will reflect regional characteristics and priorities, driving energy considerations across all vectors, including renewables, heat decarbonisation, hydrogen, energy networks, transport, and flexibility. This role requires a Wales-based team to collaborate with regional and central teams for effective energy planning, initially home-based until regional hubs open, with travel to Warwick/Wokingham as needed.
Developing the Wales RESP involves working with local organisations, including local government and energy networks, to understand infrastructure needs and attract investment. Stakeholder engagement is key to successful regional energy planning.
This is the first regional presence in Wales, and you will be instrumental in establishing and initiating energy planning within your region. As the team expands, you may oversee up to three team members.
The role includes leading aspects of the Wales RESP, engaging stakeholders, maintaining cross-team collaboration, deputising for your manager, and managing work packages. Understanding and lived experience of Wales are essential.
Our immediate focus is to build trust with stakeholders, establish processes and methodologies, and enhance our capability in whole energy systems to support local actors and industry in developing credible net-zero plans.
About us
As Great Britain’s electricity system operator, we balance supply and demand to keep electricity flowing where needed, second by second.
Becoming the National Energy System Operator
In Summer 2024, ESO will transition to NESO, an independent body responsible for planning and operating Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks, with operational independence and regulation by Ofgem.
As NESO, we will expand our roles and capabilities across electricity, natural gas, and hydrogen, considering trade-offs for a sustainable, affordable, and secure energy system.
We aim to shape energy use and consumption for future generations.
Key Accountabilities
The specific responsibilities will depend on your experience and interests, with flexibility to meet regional and ESO needs. Key tasks include:
* Developing, consulting, and implementing parts of the RESP methodology for your region.
* Becoming an expert in your region’s energy system planning and interfaces.
* Leading or contributing to work packages, ensuring coordination with other teams.
* Representing NESO’s regional planning functions at strategic levels and deputising as needed.
* Engaging with local stakeholders to gather input and ensure value delivery.
* Designing and facilitating workshops and engagement activities.
* Producing clear reports and presentations tailored to audiences.
* Gathering and incorporating stakeholder inputs into the RESP.
* Innovating in problem analysis and solution presentation, building on existing work.
About you
We seek a diverse team with skills including:
* Experience in the energy sector with technical knowledge.
* Understanding of energy project lifecycles and vectors, with expertise in at least one area.
* Experience working with local authorities or energy companies relevant to your region.
* Leadership experience in new team settings.
* Ability to communicate complex info clearly to non-technical audiences.
* Strategic thinking and stakeholder influence skills.
* Knowledge of energy data and systems.
* Project management and coordination skills.
* Curiosity and willingness to learn.
Training and development are priorities, with opportunities to train others and expand expertise.
What you'll get
A competitive salary (£46,000 - £63,000), performance bonus, 26 days leave, and a contributory pension scheme with employer match up to 12%. We promote a culture of growth, diversity, and inclusion, offering various benefits and support for professional and personal development.
