About the Organisation

As Scotland’s smallest health board, NHS Orkney is committed to delivering excellent care to our 22,000 residents. Whether you’re new to the NHS or bringing experience from elsewhere, your skills will make a real difference.

About Orkney

With over 70 islands – 20 of them inhabited – Orkney offers a unique blend of natural beauty, close-knit community and an opportunity for adventure. From dramatic coastlines and rare wildlife to rich cultural traditions and active lifestyles, it’s a place where compassion thrives and every day brings something new. Regularly named one of the UK’s best places to live, Orkney offers a lifestyle that’s both fulfilling and inspiring.

The Position

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Estates Department for a Multi-skilled Maintenance Technician – Electrical.

We are looking for a proactive and adaptable individual to join our team, delivering both planned and reactive maintenance across a wide range of plant and equipment throughout the NHS Orkney Board area.

This varied and rewarding role includes all variations of electrical testing and fault finding, the calibration and validation of sterilisation and decontamination equipment, ensuring associated plant is maintained to the highest standards and that accurate records are kept in line with regulatory requirements.

The designated post holder will also be supported to undertake specialist training and certification to develop new skills in a variety of multi‑skilled roles, enabling them to carry out key duties safely and effectively.

A flexible approach to working hours is essential, as the role may require adjustments to the standard working week to meet service needs. The successful candidate will also participate in the out‑of‑hours on‑call rota, providing vital support to ensure continuity of service.

If you’re a team player with a strong technical background and a commitment to maintaining safe, efficient healthcare environments, we’d love to hear from you.

The Candidate

The successful applicant will be an experienced electrician in building services and be prepared to complete multi‑skilled training in several specialist healthcare related equipment as part of their role.

We are committed to the delivery of outstanding care for our patients. The successful candidate will need to share this commitment and demonstrate our values while undertaking their duties in this role.

Location, Working Pattern and Contract Duration

This post will be based at The Balfour.

The successful candidate will work: Full Time 36 hours per week (0800‑1600 Monday to Thursday and 0800‑1430 on Friday).

This post is Permanent.

It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with NHS Orkney.

Benefits and Salary

Did you know NHS Scotland salaries are higher than those in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland?

The salary for this post is Band 5 and if residing on Orkney, you’ll also receive a Distant Islands Allowance of £1,719 pro rata per annum, adding extra value to your rewarding career with us.

NHS Orkney also offers an attractive pension scheme, wide range of work‑life balance policies, employee assistance programme and various discounts to both local and national retailers.

We are a committed participant in the Disability Confident Leader Scheme and guarantee to interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum essential criteria for our vacancies.
