About The Role
Balfour Beatty is looking for a Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) to join our Regional Scotland – Energy team at the Netherton Hub project in North East Scotland. This major infrastructure scheme includes HVDC and HVAC works such as converter stations, a switching station, substations (400kV and 132kV), a new depot and associated civil engineering works – earthworks, drainage, landscaping, access roads and utilities. The role will support the HSW Manager for Energy as the new Energy workstream develops and the projects move to an operational stage. Due to the scale and complexity of the projects in challenging locations, we are seeking an individual with experienced leadership skills and a customer‑focused mindset. The position is based in North Scotland (Peterhead) with regular travel to Maxim and Inverness. A company car and a subsistence package are provided for employees working away from home.
What you’ll be doing
The role is responsible for providing visible, credible and client‑focused HSW leadership across the Energy business unit portfolio. The postholder will establish, maintain and continuously develop strong, effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders – including clients, supply chain partners, insurers, senior operational leaders and direct reports – to ensure HSW expectations are understood, applied consistently and aligned to the client’s strategic objectives.

* Work collaboratively with clients and supply chain partners to influence positive outcomes and demonstrate leadership in health, safety and wellbeing standards.
* Promote a clear, structured interface between projects and the organisational HS&W team.
Strategic HS&W Leadership
* Lead, contribute to and influence the Energy sector and client HS&W working groups, championing best practice principles and sharing learning with clients and internal teams.
* Promote a strong safety culture aligned to Zero Harm, positioning the HS&W function as a value‑adding partner to operations rather than a compliance‑only function.
* Maintain a strong understanding of client priorities and strategic direction, ensuring HS&W delivery supports and enhances overall business objectives.
Assurance, Performance and Governance
* Manage the programme of inspections and audits to ensure all business units remain compliant with company, client and statutory requirements.
* Fulfil all HS&W, customer and corporate incident reporting and performance requirements.
Professional Capability
* Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation, industry and best practice developments in health, safety and wellbeing, translating this intelligence into practical, proportionate application.
* Demonstrate high‑level communication, influencing and interpersonal skills, engaging credibly at all levels of the organisation and with external customers.
* Act as a visible role model for integrity, sound judgement and collaborative leadership in the pursuit of Zero Harm.
People Management
* Lead, develop and coach individuals to build high‑performing teams, create a pipeline of talent, share learnings and contribute to continuous improvement.
