Overview
Senior Mechanical Project Engineer to provide professional mechanical engineering leadership in delivering projects related to the technical systems at Diamond Light Source. Location: Harwell, Oxfordshire. Hybrid working available (minimum 3 days onsite). Full-time or flexible hours considered.
Salary: £51,543 to £60,108 per annum (Discretionary range to £65,675) inclusive of annual allowance. Reference: 10590.
About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a facility designed to produce extremely intense beams of X‑rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists study a wide range of subjects, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and technology. We are at an exciting stage of a major upgrade, Diamond-II, which will include a new machine, new beamlines and upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, delivery capabilities and computing.
Responsibilities
* Provide creative, innovative, and adaptive mechanical engineering solutions.
* Produce engineering designs using CAD.
* Perform static structural analysis using analytical and FEA tools.
* Conduct dynamic analysis in time and frequency domains using analytical and FEA tools.
* Carry out thermal/cryogenic analysis using analytical and FEA tools.
* Test and validate prototypes for mechanical, thermal & motion systems.
* Manage project files and documentation.
* Lead risk assessments and pursue mitigation solutions.
About You / Qualifications
* Skilled Mechanical Engineer with an Engineering degree or significant equivalent experience.
* Experience delivering complex equipment from specification and concept through to manufacture, testing, installation, and commissioning.
* Knowledge/experience in:
* Designing systems for challenging conditions (Ultra High Vacuum and cryogenic temperatures).
* Designing mechatronic dynamic motion systems.
* Engineering drawings and 3D modelling; familiarity with modern manufacturing methods including additive manufacturing.
* Risk assessments and understanding of Machinery Directive requirements.
* Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams and hands-on R&D.
Good communication skills are critical to discuss ideas, present solutions, debate and collaborate at all stages of projects. Candidates without direct experience on all topics may be considered if they demonstrate clear aptitude and understanding at interview.
