Job overview

Our Cancer Directorate is inviting applications from ambitious heath care assistants who are interested to join the existing Clinical Nurse Specialists in benign Urology. This job is a part-time post to support our nurse led Trial with out Catheter clinics (TWOC) and other urology clinical work load such Urodynamic and Video urodynamics clinic You will be working in a multi-disciplinary team that provides surgical treatment to people with urological conditions.

You will be recruited at Band 2 if you have not yet completed CUH HCSW induction which includes completion of the Care Certificate and Competencies. Once completed you will move up to Band 3. If you are currently working in a support worker role and have therefore completed these, you will be recruited as Band 3

Please note you will be required to undertake a Functional Skills Test as part of your interview assessment. You will need to pass this in order to proceed to a Conditional Offer. This is applicable if you are not currently working as a HCSW at CUH.


Main duties of the job

To assist in delivering high standards of holistic care to patients, promoting their equality and dignity at all times

To assist with patient hygiene, elimination, mobility, physical comfort as appropriate to clinical area, whilst reporting specific changes.

Assist in orientating the patient, relatives and carers to the clinical area.

To assist the patient with dietary needs including the provision of meals, drinks and snacks as appropriate to the clinical area

To assist patient in performing flow test and undertake bladder scans and document appropriately

Perform and report clinical observation of a patients’ temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure. Obtain measurements of a patients’ height and weight

Observe and report changes to a patients’ condition to a registered nurse/ team or shift leader

Obtain urine and perform urinalysis

Perform Basic Life Support, and give assistance to professionals during advanced life support procedures

Promote effective communication within the multidisciplinary team.

Assist in the maintenance of Emergency Equipment. Report ant hazards to the nurse in charge

Ensure the clinical area is clean and tidy. Ensure equipment and utility areas are maintained in clean, working order

Transfer specimens, notes and results to other parts of the hospital as required

Competent in the use of the Hospital Information Support System

Prepare and restore environment for a clinical procedures and set up and assist procedure clinics

Person specification


Qualifications

* NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in health related subject
* 4 GCSE’s or equivalent
* Working towards foundation degree or equivalent


Experience

* To have worked within an acute hospital setting
* Assisting with surgical procedures
* Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team
* NHS experience
* Experience in working in outpatients settings or urology out patients
* Competency in Bladder scanning/Willingness to undertake training
* Experience in supporting patients with indwelling catheters


Knowledge

* Demonstrate awareness of the needs of patients with Catheters
* Understanding of the anxiety, distress and confusion of some patients and relatives
* Recognise the extent and limitations of own and others competence
* Awareness of National priorities and initiatives


Skills

* Well developed verbal and written communication skills
* Well developed interpersonal skills – able to liaise effectively with a wide range of people including medical staff, patients and relatives
* Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise a demanding workload
* Able to work autonomously with support Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
* Evidence of clinical competencies. Able to think laterally to find solutions to problems
* Computer Literate
* Familiar with EPIC system
