Highly Specialised Healthcare Scientist

Applicants interested in a trainee route should demonstrate a strong foundation of relevant knowledge and experience, along with clear potential to progress to Band 7 level with training and support.
This role supports the delivery of a high-quality sleep service across our main department and the Community Diagnostic Centre at Withington Community Hospital.
Job Responsibilities
* Support the service manager in day‑to‑day management and leadership of the department.
* Perform and analyse in‑patient and outpatient sleep studies (including respiratory polygraphy, full video polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing, maintenance of wakefulness testing and actigraphy).
* Issue CPAP devices and conduct follow‑up (face‑to‑face and remote clinics).
* Teach, train and mentor students and junior staff.
* Supervise and line‑manage junior staff, and oversee stock control and procurement.
* Lead service improvement, audit and quality control initiatives.
* Provide flexible working arrangements where appropriate; may be required to cover evening and night shifts depending on service demand.
Person Specification
Education / Qualifications
* Master's degree in physiological or biological science or equivalent experience.
* Undergraduate degree in physiological or biological science.
* Registered with RCCP, AHCS, or BRPT.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Holds RPSGT qualification or eligible to apply.
* Teaching qualification.
Experience
* Post registration experience in sleep medicine.
* Competent in performing, scoring and interpreting full video polysomnography.
* Experience of CPAP issue and aftercare with complex patients.
* Experience of teaching/mentoring.
* Experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
* Experience of lung function testing.
* Completed training for trainers course within last 3 years.
* Management/HR experience.
* Experience working with patients with learning difficulties.
* Experience in research/audit.
* Experience in stock control and procurement.
Knowledge
* High level understanding of respiratory physiology and pathology.
* High level understanding of sleep physiology and pathology.
* Experience of using motivational psychology.

Salary
£49,387 to £56,515 per annum, pro rata; trainee post will be paid at Annex 21.
