This is a Consultant Ophthalmologist post designed to provide sub-specialist Glaucoma and Cataract services for patients of the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust. The job is a trust-wide appointment with duties based at Boston Pilgrim Hospital, with potential commitments at other sites.
This is a replacement post, and the appointee will be expected to dedicate substantially all their time to this role.
Applicants may choose to work full-time or part-time. If part-time, job modifications will be discussed individually with the Trust and in consultation with colleagues.
The Trust provides ophthalmic services to over 750,000 people, mainly based in Boston and Lincoln, with peripheral outpatient sites in Louth, Gainsborough, Grantham, Skegness, and Spalding.
The post is currently based at Lincoln County Hospital, with some duties at peripheral sites. It aims to support service delivery, expansion, and address increasing demands, especially in Medical Retina, and to help meet the 18-week wait target.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will provide comprehensive ophthalmic services, supporting a countywide service and contributing to achieving the 18-week wait across the department. Responsibilities include teaching, postgraduate medical education, undergraduate teaching, nursing and other clinical staff education, participation in clinical audits, and reporting critical incidents. The role involves delivering both vitreoretinal and general ophthalmology services, with a focus on high-volume cataract surgery to meet contractual obligations.

Job description and responsibilities
The post involves a 1 in 6 on-call rota, with cross-site coverage and some weeks dedicated to the whole county or just the base hospital. An on-call supplement is provided, and holiday work is compensated with time off. The appointee will participate in appraisal schemes, personal development, and contribute to service development and quality improvement.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Essential: FRCS, FRCOphth or equivalent; GMC registration with Licence to Practice; specialist register for Ophthalmology.
* Desirable: Fellowship in Vitreo-retinal or Cataract, relevant higher degree, or subspecialist fellowship.
Training/Experience/Research
* Essential: Broad training in Glaucoma surgery, high-volume cataract surgery experience, clinical audit experience, ability to work independently.
* Desirable: Published research or case reports, additional relevant interests.
Skills
* Essential: Good communication, teamwork, leadership, teaching, clinical governance understanding, computer literacy.
* Desirable: Innovation and technology development skills.
