Offer description

COMPANY
Energy Intelligence is an independent provider of global energy news, analysis, research and data. The company's reputation is built on uncompromised independent analysis, backed by our access to primary sources of information and data. The company's integrated editorial, data and research teams work to provide clients with differentiated, timely and actionable insights. With over 70 years of expert energy coverage, Energy Intelligence continues to guide clients across five core services: Oil Markets, Gas and LNG, Low-Carbon Energy, Competitive Intelligence, and Risk.
Energy Intelligence has offices in eight locations around the world: London, New York, Washington, Houston, Dubai, Beirut, Singapore and Moscow.
OVERVIEW
The vacancy is for a reporter based in our London bureau to support Energy Intelligence's Oil Markets service. Ideal candidates should have significant reporting experience, although early career candidates will be considered. The reporter will cover a broad range of issues related to markets in both crude oil and refined products. The position will particularly focus on Europe but trade with the rest of the world as well as broader global downstream and petrochemical themes will also be a key focus. Indeed, for the correct candidate there is scope to lead Energy Intelligence's global coverage of petrochemicals – forecast to be the key growth area for oil demand over the coming decades.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Work collaboratively as part of global team covering oil markets with a particular focus on European oil markets, Europe-related oil trade, downstream and petrochemicals;
Write original, forward-looking news and analysis against tight daily and weekly deadlines;
Analyze developments in the downstream and petrochemicals sectors in the context of broader energy sector trends (eg long-term oil demand, energy transition, sustainable fuels);
Proactively propose agenda-setting output with a strong focus on original information, sourcing, angles and data visualization. The ideal EI story combines primary source reporting that demonstrates a deep knowledge of the subject matter with geopolitically savviness and a faculty with numbers, maps and other graphics. As such, the role could suit an experienced market reporter looking for the chance to explore more in-depth themes.
Cultivate productive relationships with sources in the public and private sectors, including executives, government officials and analysts;
Contribute to Energy Intelligence's broader oil markets output including our flagship monthly Oil Market Intelligence and potentially Opec-plus output assessments and analysis;
Develop as a thought leader on oil market trends, potentially acting as a subject matter expert in client meetings, conferences, webinars, videos and media appearances;
As part of a growing and dynamic team, the reporter may also be required to carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required of them. Travel will be required, and an ability to routinely attend industry events in London is a must.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
Previous reporting experience covering energy and/or commodities, or equivalent related experience (eg at a research institute);
Demonstrable interest not only in oil markets but in broader energy and geopolitical trends;
Excellent writing skills, including the ability to explain complex subjects in accessible prose;
A proven track record of breaking news and producing original analysis;
The ability to prioritize and deliver daily, weekly and long-term assignments on time;
Familiarity with Excel, and the ability to create basic tables and graphs; experience creating maps and infographics would be a plus;
A love of primary source reporting, and the ability to develop direct contacts with key decision makers; an extensive existing contact list would be a plus;
Comfortable using open-source intelligence such as shipping data and satellite imagery;
A sound knowledge of oil market fundamentals: eg supply/demand drivers; trade flows; crude oil grades; refinery units;
Strong analytical skills to gather information and spot and explain important trends;
Willingness to travel to attend conferences, industry events, and sites visits;
Bachelor's degree or other relevant professional training/diploma or equivalent experience;
Multimedia experience is a plus
