The job itself
Days/Times: To be arranged with family
(Please note this is an external vacancy and is not employment with East Riding of Yorkshire Council)
About the recipient
A 17-year-old young person who’s preferred pronouns are THEM/THEY
The young person you will support is kind, caring, and creative, with a passion for animals and crafting. They enjoy volunteering with dogs at the RSPCA, horse riding, and caring for farm animals. Crafting is a big part of their life - they love crochet, macramé, felting, and jewellery making. They also enjoy visiting markets, car boot sales, zoos, farms, theme parks, and going to the cinema (with some adjustments for comfort).
They prefer quieter environments and may find busy places or loud noises overwhelming. With patience and reassurance, they are becoming more comfortable visiting cafés and similar settings.
The individual requires a supportive and understanding Personal Assistant to help them access activities and manage day-to-day life. They have Autism and social anxiety, which can make social interactions challenging. Communicating with strangers (such as shop staff or bus drivers) is particularly difficult, so they do not use public transport and need a PA who is a confident car driver.
Once trust is established, they enjoy building positive relationships and engaging in open conversations. They benefit from someone who listens and provides reassurance when needed. Patience and empathy are essential qualities, as they may experience challenges with mental health. Unexpected changes to routine can be difficult, but with clear explanations and preparation, they manage well. They also sometimes need support in understanding other people’s emotions or humour, so a logical and clear approach works best.
The hours are:
• 3 hours per week during term time
• 6 hours per week during school holidays
