Overview

Accreditation, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust has been recently selected as one of four specialist hospitals in the Greater Manchester Region, which will increase the workload and diversity of patients being referred for GI input. This is an extremely exciting time to join a growing specialist hospital, co‑located with the serene rural setting to the south and the bustling urban vibe of Manchester to the north, including excellent links via airport and rail. The area has excellent state and private schools.


Job Summary

We are seeking a Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our expanding team and department. The candidate will have a passion for leadership and a desire to be part of a dynamic, fast‑paced and busy department.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

* Manage gastroenterology patients and participate in the GI Bleed and consultant of the week rotas.
* Supervise, teach and mentor junior medical staff, medical students and specialist nurses.
* Participate in regular departmental audit and help develop a research programme.


Policy and Service Development

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to policy and service development within the gastroenterology directorate and will be given opportunities to apply for leadership roles within the directorate and the wider organisation.


Academic and Professional Development

* The Trust encourages participation in continuing professional development, providing time and funding. The appointee is expected to participate in CPD and fulfil college and re‑validation requirements.
* Teaching responsibilities include clinical teaching of medical undergraduates from Manchester and providing bedside teaching to junior doctors, medical students and other health professionals.
* Participation in lunchtime meetings at the integrated education centre is expected.
* Mentoring may be provided by a mentor within the Trust to support personal development.


Research

* The Trust is developing an integrated R & D information and support infrastructure. A Research and Development fund exists, supported by a Research & Development Coordinator and Committee chaired by a Consultant Epidemiologist.
* The successful candidate should have an interest in research and be prepared to play a role in developing and contributing to R & D initiatives within the department.
* Experience in protocol development, applying for both non‑commercial and commercial R & D funding and disseminating results is highly desirable.
* A willingness to lead the implementation of R & D findings in clinical practice is welcome and the candidate will be expected to contribute actively to departmental debates on methods for enhancing service effectiveness.
* The Trust supports the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and commits to providing time and financial support for these activities.


Quality and Audit

The hospital has an active clinical audit department with quarterly inter‑departmental meetings and a regular internal audit cycle. The authority will provide medical input into broader inter‑departmental audits.

Background Checks

* An enhanced DBS check will be required, costing £54.90, to be deducted from your first Trust salary.
* Joining the DBS update service and paying the annual subscription fee of £16 are also conditions of employment.


Qualifications

* Prospective candidates should possess both parts of the MRCP or its equivalent.
* The candidate must be on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council (GMC) or be in receipt of the Certificate of Specialist Training (CCST) within six months of the interview date.
