Head of Engineering

We’re partnering with a growing technology-driven organisation undergoing major transformation and expansion, including bids for significant new government programmes.
As part of this growth, we’re looking for an experienced Head of Engineering to lead multiple engineering squads across software and data engineering functions.
This is a strategic leadership role focused on delivery, people leadership and engineering capability ideal for someone with a strong Data Engineering background who also understands broader software engineering environments.
The Role
You’ll lead an engineering function of around 30 people across multiple squads, helping shape delivery, engineering standards and team performance across a modern Microsoft technology environment.
The role is primarily management-focused rather than hands-on, although you’ll need enough technical credibility to challenge engineers, support architectural discussions and drive best practice across the function.
There is strong opportunity for progression, with the potential to grow into an Engineering Director position over the next 12–18 months.
Responsibilities
* Lead and develop multiple engineering squads across software and data functions
* Drive delivery, engineering quality and operational effectiveness
* Partner with senior stakeholders across the business
* Support engineering strategy, capability growth and transformation initiatives
* Provide leadership across both UK and offshore teams
* Build a high-performance engineering culture focused on collaboration and delivery
* Challenge and support technical decision-making without being hands-on day-to-day
Technology Environment

* Databricks
* SQL Server (including legacy estate)
About You
We’re particularly interested in candidates with a strong Data Engineering or Data Platform background who have broadened into wider engineering leadership.
You’ll likely come from a background such as:
* Head of Data Engineering
* Head of Engineering
* Engineering Manager
* Director of Engineering
* Senior Technology Leadership roles
You should have:
* Experience leading sizeable engineering teams and multiple squads
* Strong stakeholder management and delivery leadership experience
* Exposure to both software engineering and data/platform environments
* Experience operating within Microsoft / Azure technology ecosystems
* A collaborative leadership style with strong communication skills
Location & Working Pattern
The business operates a highly flexible hybrid model, with teams typically meeting in person 1–2 times per month for workshops and collaboration sessions.
Candidates based across the Midlands are preferred.
There may be occasional travel to London and Bucharest.
