Job overview

To support the assessment, care and management of patients presenting with emergency surgical conditions across emergency pathways, including those attending via the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) and patients supported through outreach to the Emergency Department (ED).

The post holder will work with a high degree of professional autonomy within agreed clinical pathways and protocols, providing enhanced clinical assessment, decision-making and coordination of care to support timely escalation, admission, discharge and continuity of care.

The role will contribute to safe, effective and patient-centred emergency surgical care, working in close collaboration with the emergency surgical multidisciplinary team to support patient flow, system responsiveness and quality of care across the emergency pathway.

Main duties of the job

·Practise within the legal and ethical framework of their relevant professional Code of Conduct, ensuring valid professional registration is maintained at all times.

·Work autonomously and as part of the emergency surgical multidisciplinary team.

·Provide enhanced clinical expertise in the assessment and management of emergency surgical patients, managing an identified caseload within the agreed scope of practice.

·Support the effective functioning of the Surgical Assessment Unit, contributing to safe patient flow, escalation and discharge planning.

·Act as a visible and accessible senior clinical practitioner within Emergency Surgery.

Person specification

Education, qualification & training

Essential criteria

11. Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
12. Degree-level education (or equivalent professional qualification).
13. Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development relevant to Emergency or Acute Surgical care.
14. Non-Medical Prescribing qualification (or willingness to work towards one where supported by the service).

Desirable criteria

15. Relevant post-registration education supporting enhanced clinical practice

Experience

Essential criteria

16. Substantial post-registration experience, including experience at Band 6 or equivalent.
17. Experience of working within Emergency Surgery, Acute Surgery, Surgical Assessment or a comparable acute setting.
18. Demonstrates a high level of clinical skill in the assessment and management of acutely unwell patients.
19. Experience of autonomous clinical decision-making within agreed protocols and scope of practice.
20. Experience of a multidisciplinary team working across service interfaces.

Desirable criteria

21. Evidence of involvement in service improvement, audit or quality improvement activity.

Skills, abilities & knowledge

Essential criteria

22. Ability to undertake comprehensive history taking and physical examination of emergency surgical patients.
23. Ability to prioritise and manage workload effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment.
24. Ability to interpret clinical information and investigations to inform patient management.
25. Ability to prescribe medicines safely and effectively, where qualified and within the scope of practice.
26. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including accurate clinical documentation.

Special circumstances

31. Ability to travel to other Trust sites as required.
