* Purpose for Fixed Term: Training Contract
This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.
Main Duties
* Support the provision of a first‑class clinical service and provide effective middle‑grade leadership (ST3 level or above) to the staff working on the unit.
* Support the clinical decision making of medical and nursing staff on the unit.
* Lead, in conjunction with the Consultant workforce, the education programme for junior doctors.
* Undertake all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies.
* Conduct clinical practice by contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s and Division’s services plans.
* Work within the framework of team decisions, show initiative, enthusiasm, and flexibility.
* Senior member of the critical care team, providing support on the registrar/airway rota (ST3 level or above).
* Assess and admit critically ill adult patients to ICU, stabilise them, make a differential diagnosis, and formulate an initial clinical plan.
* Initiate ventilation, vasopressors, renal support, advanced airway skills, and practical interventions such as insertion of arterial and central venous lines.
* Perform daily reviews of ICU patients and present findings to the duty Critical Care Consultant, organising and interpreting further investigations.
* Review critically unwell patients outside of the Critical care unit as directed by the duty Consultant and critical care outreach team.
* Support the learning and development of wider critical care clinical teams.
Responsibilities Detail
Support the delivery of high‑quality care to all patients presenting to the department, participate in undergraduate teaching programme, be fully compliant with UHS Trust’s mandatory training requirements, actively participate in the departmental education programme, and work within the framework of team decisions.
Appointment
The appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed fellow doctors.

Salary and Compensation
Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to Nodal Point 5: 6 years of specialty training, hold relevant higher specialty exam (FRCP, FRCA, FRCS), portfolio evidence of progression (Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee). Basic salary plus any additional remuneration for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (additional hours, weekend allowance, enhanced pay). CPD is highly supported and encouraged; study leave options available.

Qualifications, Training & Experience:
Essential Criteria:
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* GMC registration with a licence to practise
* Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement
* Core Training in a relevant speciality (e.g., ICM or Anaesthesia)
* At least 2 years’ experience of work in the NHS or equivalent
* Competent in airway skills
Desirable Criteria:
* MRCP, FRCS, MCEM or similar
* Current ATLS or ALS
* Qualification in Medical Education
Aptitudes and Skills:
Essential Criteria:
* Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams
* Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
* Effective communication and liaison with patients and colleagues (verbal and written in English)
