Overview
FIXED TERM CONTRACT 12 MONTHS
Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioner (ONP) position within the Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioner team. This role can be considered as a job share. Full support and training will be provided, with expectation to complete the nurse injection course alongside Glaucoma and Plastics pathway courses. Training aligns with the Royal College Guidelines OPT Framework.
Responsibilities
* Responsible and accountable for the delivery of patient care in the designated specialist areas Ophthalmic OPD & A/E and to influence practice within the MDT.
* Work on own initiative to undertake a wide range of duties relating to ophthalmology, backed up by professional skills and knowledge, including responding to adverse reactions and safely discharging patients.
* Practice autonomously and support and empower all healthcare workers and patients by providing leadership and education, including assessment and treatment of patients with challenging ophthalmology symptoms in the outpatient department.
* Assess, plan and administer care, devising individual patient-led treatment plans using clinical reasoning and current evidence.
* Develop nurse-led clinics and other expanded/practitioner role procedures approved by the Trust; coordinate interventions through multidisciplinary teams and case management.
* Ensure documentation is complete and accurate; maintain databases and records; triage calls via the advice line and support patients undergoing therapies.
* Plan and implement sessions of care based on theoretical knowledge and evidence; participate in clinical governance and supervision to ensure quality of practice.
* Bring clinical judgement to the analysis and interpretation of clinical options regarding patient care.
* Lead core nursing/health professional responsibilities including assessment, planning, implementation of care and discharge, interpretation of data, and collaboration with the patient, carers, and staff.
Clinical Core Nursing/Health Professional Responsibilities
* Assessment, planning, implementation of care and discharge; interpret data relevant to the patient’s condition and progress.
* Identify patient problems and needs with the patient, carers, senior nursing staff and other staff as appropriate; establish priorities of care and realistic goals for care plans.
* Participate in safe handling of medicines and treatments in accordance with NMC guidelines and Trust policy.
Qualifications
Essential
* Registered General Nurse
* Degree/Diploma level with significant post-registration experience
* Ophthalmology experience more than 2 years
* Mentorship level 6 (degree level) or equivalent

* Ophthalmic nurse intravitreal injection course
* Ophthalmic nurse glaucoma course

* Basic visual assessment
