You are invited to join our fantastic plastic surgical team.
There are several posts within the Plastic Surgery Team that would be ideal for anyone who wishes to consolidate their training in a specialist paediatric environment. The hospital provides a comprehensive range of paediatric specialities at tertiary care level. In association with the Institute of Child Health there are opportunities for research, training and development in all aspects of health & disease in children.
X2 posts commencing 1st October 2026 and x1 post commencing for February 2027 all for 6 months.
All of these placements are open to specialist registrars in Year 3 or above (or equivalent) and will provide experience in paediatric plastic surgery including correction of craniofacial deformity, cleft lip and palate, and congenital hand deformity. There may be opportunities for successful applicants to extend their contract either with general plastics or in other plastics sub-specialties including Congenital Hand & Limb, Cleft or Craniofacial
Main duties of the job
The Plastic Surgery Department deals principally with elective cases. There are very few emergency cases, burns and trauma. The range of surgery includes the following:
Major craniofacial operations from infancy to adolescence
Clefts of lip and palate
Congenital hand and upper limb conditions
Vascular Anomalies
Congenital ear deformity
Facial Surgery to correct congenital defects Treacher-Collins Syndrome, etc.
Facial reanimation surgery
General Paediatric Plastic Surgery
Neurofibromatosis (NF1)

Academic/Professional qualification/Training
Essential criteria
* Full GMC registration with Licence to Practice or IELTS Certificate with an overall score of with a minimum score of 7 in each domain or Occupational English Test (medical version) with a minimum score of B in each domain.
* Basic medical qualifications | Higher degree in Medicine
* Higher surgical qualifications | FRCS / MRCS (or equivalent)
* IELTS (if you required sponsorship via the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh)
Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
* Registrar of equivalent level training in Plastic Surgery
* Experience of teaching / presenting
* Understanding of principles of clinical governance
* Plastic Surgery – knowledge of basic texts
* Aware of own limitations, consulting senior colleagues appropriately
* Understanding of patient confidentiality & data protection
* Understanding of principles of clinical governance
Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
* Competence in all aspects of plastic surgical management
* Basic Training in general surgery at SHO level
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Ability to work in a team and also on own initiative, without Consultant supervision in some instances
* Ability to teach nursing and medical staff
* Medical management and ability to supervise junior medical staff
* Ability to work under pressure
* Presentation skills
