After Sandhurst training, you’ll do the six-month Troop Commanders course and learn about reconnaissance, advising on engineering issues and managing people and equipment. You’ll have opportunities to join the Para or Commando Course if you wish to serve with those regiments.
To qualify, you must be between 17 years 9 months and 28 years 11 months. You’ll need 72 UCAS points and 35 ALIS points at GCSE (including at least grade C/4 in English, Maths and a science/foreign language) and you must pass a basic fitness test.
What you’ll do
As an Engineering Officer, you’ll be the leading expert behind Army engineering projects worldwide. You could plan, lead and manage demolitions, set up water supplies, build runways, clear mines or advise friendly forces on terrain and capabilities. In this role, you’ll begin your career in a position of management, commanding responsibility for your team of soldiers. You’ll receive world-class training at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst to develop transferable leadership skills and qualifications you need to motivate and support your team.
Outside the Sandhurst training, you’ll continue to learn and grow. Being an Officer is a global adventure, whether you’re leading expeditions, running operations abroad, or delivering humanitarian aid to communities in need.
Salary, leave and benefits
Your starting salary while training will be £34,676, rising to £41,456 upon completion of basic trade training. You’ll also receive 38 days of annual leave each year (plus bank holidays and extra leave after operations), free medical and dental care, cheaper living costs, and free gym and sports facilities. Normal working hours are typically 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday unless you’re away on operations or training exercises.
