Vehicle Mechanic / Vehicle Technician – The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Vehicle Mechanic to join a busy and dynamic workshop team based at Glasgow Airport. This hands-on role involves maintaining and repairing a wide range of Ground Support Equipment (GSE), including aircraft tugs, towing tractors, baggage elevators, and other specialist airside vehicles.
Full training on airport equipment will be provided. This position is ideal for a qualified HGV, LGV, plant, commercial vehicle, or fleet mechanic looking to develop their skills in a unique and varied engineering environment.
Vehicle Mechanic / Vehicle Technician – Key Responsibilities
Carry out servicing, maintenance, and repairs on Ground Support Equipment and associated vehicles
Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults efficiently
Complete inspections, brake testing, and smoke tests while reporting defects accurately
Maintain detailed job cards and service documentation
Liaise with the Workshop Supervisor regarding repair progress and additional work requirements
Ensure correct ordering, booking, and storage of parts
Work independently and outdoors in varying weather conditions
Participate in the on-call rota (1 week in 4)
Vehicle Mechanic / Vehicle Technician – Health, Safety & Compliance
Follow all Health & Safety procedures and safe working practices
Correctly use PPE, tools, and workshop equipment
Report hazards, incidents, defects, and near misses promptly
Support compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 standards
Adhere to environmental and waste management procedures
Vehicle Mechanic / Vehicle Technician – About YouEssential Skills & Experience
Proven experience as a Vehicle Mechanic working on HGV, LGV, commercial vehicles, plant machinery, or fleet vehicles
Level 3 qualification in Vehicle Maintenance & Repair (City & Guilds, NVQ or equivalent)
Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills
Full UK driving licence
Ability to work independently and within a team
Good understanding of workshop health & safety procedures
Desirable Skills
Welding experience
Hydraulic and electrical fault-finding knowledge
Previous experience working on Ground Support Equipment or specialist vehicles
Additional Requirements
Right to work in the UK
Ability to obtain an airside pass, including:
Criminal record check
5-year employment history verification
Ability to provide proof of qualifications and certifications
Vehicle Mechanic / Vehicle Technician Working Hours
Monday to Friday – Rotating Shifts:
06:00 – 14:30 (2 weeks)
08:00 – 16:30 (2 weeks)
On-Call Rota
1 week in 4 covering weekends
£15.75 per hour standby allowance
Minimum 4 hours paid at time-and-a-half if called out
