Offer description

Summary

***INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY PLEASE***

The National Trust was started by people who wanted everyone to benefit from greenspace and our shared built heritage. To do this effectively we recognise the need to increase the focus on places where most people live – towns and cities. We're delivering and managing a range of high profile and exciting urban green space and built heritage initiatives with an ambition to significantly scale up over the next few years, to address our target to end unequal access to nature, history and beauty for ten million people over the next ten years. We’re looking for someone to help shape our work and who has knowledge of the challenges and opportunities faced by urban places in the 21st Century and the role that the National Trust and sector partners could play in delivering public benefit through our core charitable work.

This is a fixed term contract due to end when the previous employee returns from maternity leave. At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to be more than 12 months.

What it's like to work here

We work with dedicated people in inspiring places and we have the opportunity to make a difference with the work we do. We have big ambitions, value creativity and diversity and want to work together in new, dynamic and innovative ways.

Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon and there will be an expectation for you to attend the office at least once a week. However, there is flexibility on where you are based at other times. You will be required to work at a National Trust location for 40-60% of your working week. This will be discussed in more detail at interview.

The role will provide the opportunity to frequently travel to our regional teams and partners across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to co-design projects and initiatives in partnership. We value diversity and are committed to being a truly inclusive organisation, with teams that reflect the diversity of our society.

Due to the nature of the work we do and the experiences we offer, you may occasionally need to work evenings and be expected to frequently travel to our regional hubs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

What you'll be doing

You’ll be a crucial part of the central Urban team and have overall responsibility for management and oversight of our urban work reporting to the Head of Urban with a small team of your own to manage. You’ll need to balance core programme management skills with the ability to be pragmatic, working across many parts of the National Trust and actively engage with internal and external stakeholders to develop effective partnerships and build consensus. You'll be responsible for delivering towards our new strategy, particularly our ‘Ending Unequal Access’ goal, and will work closely with the Head of Access & Participation, the Head of Placemaking and Design and the Senior Urban Programme Manager and broader urban communities of practice and city teams. You'll facilitate evidence led decisions including developing and commissioning new research to ‘make the case’ for urban projects and supporting urban heritage and greenspace project development.

You'll take a direct role in programme managing the Trust's 20 green corridor programme and working with regional and national urban teams. Although comfortable working in detail you will have an awareness of the big picture and apply strategic thinking. You'll also support the Head of Urban manage the overall urban governance, finance, progress reporting and communications with relevant boards and stakeholders.

Using your skills and experience you'll help build capacity and support others on technical issues relating to wider urban challenges and opportunities relating to urban built heritage and greenspace.

Who we're looking for

We’d love to hear from you if you're:
1. knowledge and experience of delivering public benefit through access to history and greenspace in towns and cities
2. able to demonstrate experience of successfully delivering complex end to end project/programme management, including defining resources, leading procurement securing project teams and matrix management across multiple projects/programmes
3. a Professional with technical knowledge and skills in project management demonstrated by a recognised project (AMP PMQ/Prince) or programme management (MSP) qualification
4. able to evidence ongoing CPD in your career to date
5. you're a flexible thinker and problem-solver, skilled at negotiating and building productive networks, and confident in using your expertise to influence decisions with senior leaders
6. a skilled communicator, with experience of managing complex and challenging situations with competing interests and a diverse range of people
7. a leader for inclusion, who finds ways to create an inclusive culture

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
